InterstitialAd not closing on 'back' click

In the last month i started to receive a lot of complains that 'back' button not closing InterstitialAd in my application.

Today this issue started to happen on my device too.
I tried to run google interstitial example from here, but encountered in the same issue.

I tried running the example on different devices, on some devices the back is working, on on others not.

Here are the list of devices that i know 'back' is not working:

Huawei mate 10 pro - Android 9,

Galaxy A70,

Galaxy S10,

Galaxy A7,

LG G6 - Android 9,

Redme Note 8,

Samsung Note 8

And more.

Each day number of complains is growing,

I tried to use other applications(from play store) with admob InterstitialAd and encountered same issues.
Another issue is that sometimes the InterstitialAd close button is not reacting, sometimes need to wait couple of seconds before close button react, sometimes it just stuck, and the only option is to kill the application.

Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention.

Having tested the Interstitial ads on Android phones, I have not seen such an issue. From the way it appears this could be due to something that has happened with the OS on the phone or something else. The other part is that most if not all the phones on that list are 1 generation back and some even 2. Considering that the newest phones are coming out shortly this could also be a cause for this issue also.

The other thing that I have seen recently is that the virtual buttons on Android have changed look and feel. so not sure if when they changed the UI. That they may have changed the way they act also. If the devices have had an update. And from what I have seen this has caused some issues.

Also, double check this sample that we use just for comparison to what you used.

Could you also share any error messages or Charles logs that you might have from testing this. As well as what version of the SDK you are using.

Thank you for the additional information. As for why we can have different results? I tested on a different device then my coworker. Due to that it is possible that for what I have it was able to work for me, and not for them. As you stae even that some devices work and others do not. 

I have also looked into the other posting that you showed and would also ask you what play-service-ads are you using?And what appcompat? Also what version is the AdMob SDK?

I even tried to run interstitial example on emulator, on Android 8 and 9 'back' button not working, only on Android 10 'back' button is working.

i am encountering the same problem on my apps without updating anything. Also app which are not updated since 1 or 2 month. Also on Android 11 Beta (Pixel 3XL) the back button is not working. 

It is not possible that you say you cannot encounter any issue. This must be something internal with the google ads api ?? Because my apps did not change. I am using 19.2 and 19.3

I haven't had this issue on my own test devices yet, but for the past month, a lot of my customers are suddenly reporting that they are unable to close Admob interstitials (both by back button and by the interstitial 'x' button).  My own app is still using v 19.2.0 of the Admob SDK.

One customer has now supplied screenshots of a couple of troublesome ads. Both ads have correctly sized images at the top, but oversized text elements below, overflowing the right and bottom edges of the screen. The AdChoices button displays in the top-right corner, but the 'x' button is not visible (perhaps pushed offscreen?). The customer also insists the Android back button doesn't close the ad either.

Because of this issue i am forced to remove interstitial ads from my application.
I don't understand why it is taking so long to fix this issue? If it is done intentionally by Google please provide some explanation.

I've had reports of this happening on a half dozen different ads. The only screenshots I've received were the two above, which look to be of a similar format. I can't provide a log as, so far, it hasn't occurred on my own devices (or at least, I'm not being fed the same ads). Apart from the user complaints I'm receiving, I've also noticed my click-through rate increasing from about 1.2% to 2% over the last couple weeks, possibly from customers tapping the ads in an attempt to exit them (note: my own code hasn't changed in two months). This urgently needs to be fixed.

 I really doubt that problem  depends on particular ad creatives. I can reproduce it with ANY ad creatives including Test ad units. This fact contradicts with your answer "As we believe it is more an issue with the ads that you are seeing." 

Do we need to report it to AdMob team?  Like already stated, our CTR had raised significantly over past 2 weeks, putting us in possible violation with Admob.

These reports have been coming in for weeks now, with Google promising action. Like others here, my app is being hit with bad reviews and losing loyal users. Meanwhile, your advertisers are paying for ads that aren't displayed correctly, can't be clicked, or which are being clicked accidentally.

This problem is affecting so many different ads, apps and devices, that it's clearly been triggered by a change in Google's ad-serving code.

Have you at least identified the cause now? Is a fix really imminent or should all developers and advertisers using Google interstitials just switch to a different ad service?

I also received emails from users with the problem. And what I can contribute is that in ALL cases the devices have custom fonts settings, they have the font size settings, that is, they have Large or Extra Large font size, The text is seen outside the Ads for that reason,

So, this makes me feel weird taking into account how much buggy ad units can be, and that this back button "feature" was last hope to deal this such ad units.

We still though are asking people if you should see any issues with the ads to please get a Charles log of the offending ad, and bring it to our attention. This will allow us to look deeper into some of the other issues that you developers may be having.

If back button features is removed, why shouldn't they hide navigation bar when interstitial ad shows up (like other ad networks do)? Also, close button in the ad is not working, users get stuck in there, how should they close the ad?

I got Charles log for few ads which I could not close (using x button or hitting back button), download the zip file from attachments.

However one thing that I noticed today on my device, some ads were getting closed if I use x or close button on the ad (but not all, some ad still get stuck on the screen), it never happened before on my device since this issue started. So it looks like Admob team is aware of the issue.

Anyway, I hope the log files that I sending will help you to resolve the issue.

I was able to show the ad from the Charles log that you provided. As per testing, I'm afraid that I wasn't able to reproduce the behavior on my end (please see attached files). Was any action ever taken to fix this issue? It's still affecting some of my users, but I have been getting fewer complaints than before. I'm not sure if this is because of something fixed at the ad server end, or because the affected users have simply given up and uninstalled.

No, it's not fixed. I tried our app on my phone, can't close fullscreen ads, it happens almost every time in our app, the timer on the at the top doesn't count down, it stuck at 5 seconds. Here's the video

Also as far as the back button, that would not work. As we recently disabled the back button for getting out of ads. So the only way to close it would be to use the "X" or "Close" buttons. As for the issue with the invalid traffic and funds taken. You would need to contact our Product Support Team . As we are unable to handle that and they are better equipped to do that for you.

Hello, I'm using com.google.android.gms:play-services-ads:19.4.0 sdk and i'm also facing the same issue. Clicking on back button doesn't close the interstitial ad. How ever, clicking on Cross (X) is closing the test ad. I have tried in OnePlus 7 (Android 10) and also in emulator.

We are releasing a feature where the back button is not enabled during interstitial videos on Android, and to close the ad the user needs to click the "close" button vs hitting the back button.

We see a benefit to all parties: users will now have a consistent way to exit interstitial videos on Android from all advertising networks, advertisers may see higher conversions on their ads, and publishers could see an increase in revenue. This helps us align with the industry standard across networks where the "close" button is already the default option for many of our partners.

Thank you for reporting this. As per checking, this seems to be a different behavior which was reported by other publishers. Could you confirm if the issue is reliably reproducible on your end? If so, could you kindly provide a Charles log (see instructions here) capturing the behavior via Reply privately to author option? Also, I could see that you're using an old version of the SDK. Could you please update to the latest version of the SDK (19.4.0), then check if the issue still exist?

This problem still persists, I have tested it on an emulator and three different real devices, xiaomi android 9, motorola e7 power android 8 and motorola e7 power android 10. And the problem is present. You cannot close the interstitial by clicking the "close" button. It does not respond to any click event. 

I have tried with dependencies 19.3.0 and 19.4.0

My AdMob account has been disabled due to this bug! Because of this, at the end of August and throughout September, the CTR doubled! In all countries! This is happening massively! The admob robots have identified this as invalid activity! I have lost a lot of money!

I have already filed an appeal, where I explained why the CTR may increase. I also wrote to the support service. In response, I got used to standard refusals, without explanation. I have an app with 1,000,000+ installs and 100,000+ DAOs. There have never been any violations. There weren't even warnings. And at one point, without warning, I receive an email that my account has been disabled.

If their is any information that you can show that our SDK is causing something to happen that triggers invalid traffic please share that with us and we will happily look into it. At the moment we do not see anything that would cause this.

Hi Jordi,

thank you for bringing this question to our attention. If you are referring to the clicking of the "back" button on android? Then this is working as intended. A few patches back, the back click functionality was removed for performance reasons.

If their is a different issue that you are referring to could you please explain in more detail?

Hello, Thank you for the quick reply.

People are complaining that the app freezes after interstitial pops. Impossible for them to quit the ad. Only way is to kill the app.

We are experiencing the same issue on our app, it's been months but AdMob hasn't fixed the issue. I am trying to figure out what's causing the issue, are you using any Ad Mediation in your app? We are using MoPub Ad mediation  and have the same issue as yours.
