Hello,

I installed 'Git for windows' lately at my new desktop computer, and something is wrong with it.

1. Some commands are not working or working differently as usual
(e.g)git --version, git status
2. Also current branch is invisible.
3.When I try to execute 'Git GUI', the following error comes out.
"Cannot parse git version string"

Some of my collegues has 100% same issues.

I tried many different things.
Such as,
1. Install former version
2. Change saving directory (e.g)D drive
3. Change system enviroment variable PATH
4. Format WINDOWS 10

Hi,

1) What is the value of the PATH variable after installation of git-for-windows
2) Please check for unbalanced % in all environment variables
3) Please try opening (running) GitBash as administrator
4) Does Git GUI work?

1) What is the value of the PATH variable after installation of git-for-windows

My PATH is like this.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Oracle\Java\javapath;
C:\Windows\system32;
C:\Windows;
C:\Windows\System32\Wbem;
C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\;
C:\Windows\System32\OpenSSH\;C:\Program Files (x86)\NVIDIA Corporation\PhysX\Common;
C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\NVIDIA NvDLISR;
C:\Program Files\Git\cmd;

2) Please check for unbalanced % in all environment variables
I am sorry that I don't know what "unbalanced %:-" is.

3) Please try opening (running) GitBash as administrator
still not working

4) Does Git GUI work?
No, it shows error like this. "Cannot parse Git version string"

Which commands do work?
Are you running in git-bash or another shell?
Are their any IDEs installed that come with their own git?

Hi,

1. Which commands do work?
git log or git commit works on git bash

2. Are you running in git-bash or another shell?
I use git-bash.

3. Are their any IDEs installed that come with their own git?
I think there  is no other IDE installed with git.

In addition, I found that 'git commands' are working but not showing on command window.
But still don't know the reason.

I am not sure it is the same issue but I was having a similar problem and it had to do with Anaconda installation. I upgraded Anaconda and git stopped working and then I went to reinstall git and it didn't work. Finally, after uninstalling Anaconda git was back to normal. I was unable to find any other source describing this issue I was having, so I share it here.

Hi Omar,

A contributor identified a specific issue with Ananconda in
https://github.com/git-for-windows/git/issues/2384#issuecomment-705794498:
it leaves an undeleted registry entry.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor]
"AutoRun"=hex(2):...

Deleting this entry solved the problem in that instance.

Ciao,
Johannes
