Dear friends,

I'm happy to announce the availability of Frescobaldi 3.1.3, a bugfix
release, with bugfixes, updated translations and a small new feature: a
Clear button to empty the Music View.

Thanks again Davide for your share of Mac OS X fixes!

The source tarball is uploaded, packaged releases will probably follow
soon. Many thanks to all the contributors!

Merry Christmas!

Wilbert and the rest of the Frescobaldi team

Dear Wilbert,

I hope your Christmas was spiritually and musically fulfilling, safe, and with

Thank you, and a very Happy New Year.

Dear Wilbert, thank you for the marvellous work. Without Frescobaldi,
managing with LilyPond would be a harder, much harder!
I wish you a wonderful year,

Luca

I've just pushed the update for the Linux flatpak package:
https://flathub.org/apps/details/org.frescobaldi.Frescobaldi

Should be available in a few hours.

Documentation browser is now working fine, as I fixed a wrong
environment variable needed by PyQtWebengine.

Installed it using macports.
Gives error: The 'python-poppler-qt5' distribution was not found and is required by frescobaldi

I thought this was already present, because I used Frescobaldi with macports all the time.

What next?

regards, Eef

Dear Eef,

I see that most ports have been built on macOS 10.15 (darwin 19),
while some have been built on macOS 11 (darwin 20).
This means that you upgraded to macOS 11 from macOS 10.15 without
performing the migration.
When upgrading the system to a new major version you should follow the
instructions at
https://trac.macports.org/wiki/Migration
I'm not sure your problem is due to this, but poppler built on darwin
20 and py37-poppler-qt5 built on darwin 19 makes me suspicious.
I don't know if you use MacPorts only for Frescobaldi or also for other ports.
Big Sur is quite new and there are many problems in convincing some
pieces of software to build, so you may prefer to wait before
uninstalling all ports as per the instructions.
You can check the status of ports at ports.macports.org, although the
build information is not complete and not always fully accurate.
Anyway, by following the migration instructions you should get closer
to a fully functioning Frescobaldi.

As far as I am aware the only dependency of Frescobaldi which cannot
build on macOS 11 on the x86_64 architecture (with arm64 there are
more problems) is portmidi.
I'm looking into it.

Meanwhile you can install Frescobaldi by manually removing the
dependency on portmidi.
One way to do it is the following, preferably after performing the
migration as above and a `sudo port selfupdate`.

1) In a Terminal window:
sudo port edit --editor nano frescobaldi
2) Locate the line containing `depends_run-append port:portmidi` (it
should be line 48).
3) Comment that line by adding # at the beginning of the line.
4) Save with ctrl-o (press enter to confirm the file name) and exit with ctrl-x.
5) In the same Terminal window:
cd $(dirname $(dirname $(which port)))
sudo portindex
6) Now you should be able to install/upgrade Frescobaldi (without MIDI
support) with
sudo port upgrade frescobaldi

I'll let you know when portmidi's problem is solved, so that you can
reverse the change and rebuild Frescobaldi.

Let me know if you need more guidance or if you have further issues.
Best wishes.

Bello Davide. Thans you for your analyses and adviseurs.
I will do this in coming days. For regular work I fallback on older Mac version of Frescobaldi (3.1.2).
Best for me would be a new Mac dmg for Big Sur. Perhaps that will come again some day.

Or you can wait for the prebuilt application bundle (without
Documentation Browser and SVG View).
Yesterday I solved a problem I had with the virtual machine I use to
build it and I should be able to upload the new version later tonight.
It should work on macOS 10.11-10.15 and I expect it to run also on
macOS 11, but I'm not sure and cannot test it (my machine stops at
10.13).
It will be helpful if you test it anyway.
When the application is available, I'll announce it on this list and
on LilyPond's users list.

Best wishes.

the prebuilt application bundle for macOS can be found at
https://github.com/frescobaldi/frescobaldi/releases
It should run on macOS 10.11-10.15 and I expect it to run also on
macOS 11, although I have no way to test it.
If you are running macOS 11, I would be grateful if you could test the
application and report the results.
As with the previous versions, the prebuilt application is still
lacking the Documentation Browser and the SVG View (more details in
the release page).

Frescobaldi can be installed also with MacPorts, resulting in a fully
functional application (including the Documentation Browser and the
SVG View) on macOS 10.11, 10.14 and 10.15.
It can be installed also on macOS 10.13, provided that Xcode 10
(instead of Xcode 9) is installed.
On macOS 10.12 the installation fails, but I can give instructions to
make it succeed resulting in an application lacking the Documentation
Browser and the SVG View.
On macOS 11 on the x86_64 architecture the installation fails, but I
can give instructions to make it succeed resulting in an application
lacking MIDI support.
On macOS 11 on the arm64 architecture the installation fails due to a
possible bug in MacPorts and I currently have no solution.

I will update the Homebrew cask for Frescobaldi shortly.
The cask installs the prebuilt application mentioned above, so it
lacks the Documentation Browser and the SVG View.
I plan to turn Frescobaldi into a Homebrew formula again, so that it
results in the fully functional application.
I will need help in doing this and I will write about it soon in a
separate thread.

Best wishes of a happy new year!

Installed the dmg on Bigsur.

No errors to be seen. So I will work with this.

Great job. Thank you so much.

PS: Any ideas on how to get midi running ?

I can confirm that basic operations seem to work. Will report back as I use further.

Hello Wilbert,

Thanks for the updated version.

Despite my best efforts and decades of experience with UNIX, I am
utterly unable to get Frescobaldi document view working on current
Arch Linux. The python-poppler-qt5 refuse to build with complex
dependencies on sip that are beyond my ken. I am just alerting you to
this. Others here seem to have got it working by rebuilding these
dependencies, but Arch system, can vary widely as they are so
customised.

It's at the point that I have to use Ubuntu to use Frescobaldi, but
this is not my desired outcome.

I don't imagine anybody has the time or resources to solve this one,
so I'll just abandon, having spent days on it. Not a complaint, just a
notice.

Again, thanks for all your work!

fwiw I built my poppler stuff on Arch with yay, not pip

might be worth a try
