Apologies for an off-topic post.  I've been lurking on this list for more than a couple of decades, and joined when Don Ferris built me a steel bike some time in the 1990's.  Unfortunately, that bike broke due to a crash, and Carl Strong built my current steel frame in 2006.

The Strong frame is in need of re-powder coating.  The powder coat has come off the top and bottom of the head tube, the bottom bracket, and both rear dropouts and derailleur hangar, and there is pitting underneath due to my corrosive sweating.  I reached out to Carl this past summer but did not hear back, and understand that he's drastically cut back on his bike business.

I'm in the Redmond, Washington area and looking for local recommendations where to get this work done.  I don't know if the entire frame needs to be redone or if just the areas I mentioned can be touched up.  I'm hoping to be able to simply spot repair the powder coating because if I do start riding more as is my intention, I'll probably get another bike since my now 64 year old body probably wants different geometry.  But I really would love to get my Strong frame back on the road.

Again, apologies for an off-topic post, and thank you for any help you can give me.

I’m in Seattle and my powder coater just retired.  In the past, I have used Seattle Powdercoat in Fremont with very good results.  They are a bit more expensive but results have always been excellent.   I don’t know about spot repairing but they could advise you on that.

Wayne-
I'm available to check out your frame and see if it's worth recoating. There really isn't a way to spot touch up powder, but it's a great opportunity to pick a new color! I'm in SODO right under the west seattle bridge.

Hahn probably knows all the reliable powder coating companies in the Seattle area.  I have used Seattle Powder Coating in Fremont several times, also more than several years ago, and they did a great job at a reasonable price.  Colors were limited if you picked from what they had on hand.  If you picked a color which was special order, then the price increased significantly.  They are/were good at basic powder coating when I used them last.  Special effects such as fades, chromatics, and layering (if that's the correct term) were not in their wheel house, but you never know, they may have upped their game over the last ten years.

Regards,

Corrie

Hey everybody! Sorry I wasn't clear about this. I powdercoat in house and use all kinds of fun finishes! If you go to
All of the bikes there are powdercoated.

.A case like this, I would recommend wet paint, try to get a decent match, sand out the bad places and feather over into the sound PC finish.

Good luck!

Wayne,

I've gotten three bikes and a bunch of racks powder coated at Seattle Powdercoat. This was around 10-12 years ago and they did great work for a fair price. Not sure what they charge now.

Also, the bike that I've been riding through the last 6 Seattle Winters was powdercoated by Hahn at Rossman Cycles and it has held up incredibly well. On the (rare) occasion that I give it a clean, the luster of the powdercoat comes back surprisingly well and it's held up to chips and scratches way better than I have any right to expect it to.

I recommend both of these businesses, but Hahn is a framebuilder and specializes in powdercoating bikes. Personally, someone who focuses on bikes would always be my first choice because bikes are unusually tricky to get right when it comes to paint/powder coat. There's a lot of tricks of the trade to be learned and knowing those can make a big difference in the quality and durability of the finish.

Full disclosure: Hahn is a friend, but that's not why I'm recommending him. He does good work.

My 2 cents,
Alistair
