Hi!
I have a question concerning the best French words to use in the French translation of the online dictionary making course. As a user of FLEx, which labels would you use to describe the layout as indicated below?
In English we've used the words areas, views and panes.
I have written the same paragraph twice below, using different word choices to refer to the labelled sections of the display, (using the same colour text to correspond with the labels in the screenshot) The second paragraph uses the same vocab as the FLEx manual on Outilingua, however I recognise that the DLS description of the layout may be just slightly different.
I want to ensure that the French course uses the same vocab that people already use and are familiar with, and to get that established early on. That's my main reason for asking this in this forum!

(For reference, the text below is from Outilingua):
Volet de la navigation (Boutons, outils/affiches)Volet d'aperçu dictionnaire"Nous avons la barre de menu Windows ™ conventionnel, barre d'outils, barre d'état, etc., mais les affichages de FLEx sont typiquement divisé en deux volets ou plus. Le volet de gauche est le volet de navigation. C'est ici que vous choisissez quel affichage de FLEx vous souhaitez voir et l'outil dans la zone que vous souhaitez utiliser."
Thanks in advance,
Marlene
Hi Marlene
Thanks for your efforts to make the French training use as natural French as possible. Unfortunately, in the past, most of the translation was done by second-language speakers so there is some variety. Thanks to Crowd-in we have the benefit of some native speakers.
Also, when in doubt it is good to use the Microsoft Language Portal. That way you can see what other software uses. I looked up those three words and I found:
Area à zone
Views à affichages
Panes à volets
In Paratext we also use ‘affichage’ for view, but ‘panneau’ for pane and ‘onglets’ for a another window in the same pane. I can’t quickly find an example of area but I seem to remember using ‘zone’.
But whatever you do, please avoid using yellow text. I don’t know how others coped, but I just couldn’t read it on my screen with a white background.
See below for some definitions from Microsoft.
English | French | Defintion |
Area | zone | A part of the user interface dedicated to a particular purpose, such as "instant message area." |
Pane | volet | A portion of a software window bounded by and separated from other portions by vertical or horizontal bars and having a separate function. |
Pane | volet | Any window that is not full-screen on which service functions or navigation elements appear when selected. |
View | Afficher | To cause an application to display information on a computer or device screen. |
View | Vue | In relational database management systems, a logical table created through the specification of one or more relational operations on one or more tables. A view is equivalent to a divided relation in the relational model. |
View | affichage | The display of information from a given perspective or location. |
View | Affichage | A common menu item that enables the user to select how the contents of the current program are displayed. |

I hope that helps.

Sorry the colours didn't work out. Please equate my blue words with the purple labels on the screenshot image.

Hi,
I prefer suggestion 2 for all three terms.
I am not sure what I would have used spontaneously though.
Best,
Françoise

I like this new suggestion of « domaines » better than « zones » (in my ex-Toolbox-user head, these are separate databases in fact).
