Hi,

I have been using FLEx for some time on Windows, together with Pathway for producing printouts of wordlists/dictionaries.
I am using LaTeX as well, but on my Linux partition.

I just installed FLEx on my Ubuntu partition today.
Then I followed the instructions for Pathway. I can open Pathway with ConfigurationTool in the terminal.
But the Export/Pathway in FLEx is grey (not accessible). Why? So as for now I can't export with Pathway.
Also, the debian package for XeLaTeX_for_Ubuntu opens in Ubuntu Software Center but just crashes all the time when trying to install. Why?

Anyone have any idea on what is going on?

PS:  It is written XeLaTeX for Ubuntu 12.04 precise (or 14.04 trusty) 32-bit (required for XeLaTeX export). Why only these two distributions?

best

I have installed xelatex on another Linux system (not Ubuntu). I have
however seen comments on the xetex mailing list to the effect that some
of the Linux distros are behind on the versions of xetex and other
LaTeX-related software they install, some badly behind. You might try
installing the TeX Live distribution, which is updated yearly; you can
get it here:
https://www.tug.org/texlive/
Be aware that it is a huge set of files, and you need a _good_ internet
connection. You can step out for a couple cups of coffee while it's
installing...

Thanks for the reply. Are these below old?

It tells me I use texlive 2013.20130722-1

When I run XeLaTeX

This is XeTeX, Version 3.1415926-2.5-0.9999.3 (TeX Live 2013/Debian)
 restricted \write18 enabled.

When I run LaTeX

This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-2.5-1.40.14 (TeX Live 2013/Debian)
 restricted \write18 enabled.

They are not the most recent versions. I'm not sure how different the
newest latex/pdftex is, but there were some substantial changes to xetex
this last year.

Texlive 2014 came out back in May, I think.

Hi Jonathan,

Do you have access to the [Linux FLEx] and [LinuxUser] email lists? There might be people there who can more readily address these things. On the question of why only these two distributions - if you're asking about FLEx, I think a rough answer may be that between Precise and Trusty there were some major changes made in how keyboarding works, with the result that it took way more effort than should have been required for FLEx to successfully make the transition to Trusty. So just that these -two- distributions are now supported is something of a milestone. If you're asking about XeLaTeX - I'm not yet familiar with this, but if this is meant to run alongside FLEx, I imagine the places it can be used are essentially constrained by the same things that have constrained FLEx.

We tested the Pathway version we build on 12.04 on 14.04 and found that it worked. The XeLaTeX is based on the 20140306 version of TeX Live (reduced to what Pathway needs and augmented with some macros of our own).

I think one thing that has held us back on trusty is that it doesn't appear to work with Virtual Box on Windows. When I told it to upgrade, it said the video drivers were not supported and they didn't recommend upgrading.

So we did test with a machine that had trusty installed but it doesn't happen as often when it can't be done on the virtual machine...

I will ask the team to test again with the latest sprint release...
