When boiler water level is below probe, pump runs while auto-refill solenoid clicks open to fill boiler until water reaches the probe.  This ensures that your element is never dry.   The leftmost front knob allows manual -no pump- refill to top off boiler which prevents pump running while you steam.  You could use the manual knob to fill a dry boiler but I would first figure out if the pump works.  Good precaution to disconnect the element until it is submerged.

It doesn't seem to do anything. It makes a little sweeping noise but that's it.

The second left knob is the water inlet that must be open.  What is your water source?  Even without power, the pressure from main should allow manual refill to bypass the pump until fixed.

Ok. Water comes from the line to the machine. Water is on and valve is open. The first time I turned on the machine the pump ran for 2 seconds then nothing. If I turn on the machine and leave it, nothing gets hot. I pushed the left most button and nothing happens.

First step should be to fill boiler without power, don't let the machine run dry to protect element.

Hold the manual refill knob until water level reaches between Min/Max.

I am certain you are already doing this, but if not, Google "Faema Compact C85 Rebuild," lots of info.

I knew nothing about espresso machines at the time I purchased mine.

Ok! I got water running thru the machine! Power is on and when you hit the button water comes thru the group head. Just.. no heat.

It's possible the thermal protection was tripped, turn off power and press the red switch just under the element to reset.

Hi, welcome to the group. Do you have a multimeter? If so, you can check whether the heating element terminals are getting 110 VAC and whether the element is good. The resistance in the element should be a few ohms, but not 0 or infinite. Depending on what shape your machine is in, you might want to consider doing a full restoration. If there's scale in the boiler, you'll at least want to descale that. Luckily these machines are easy to work on.

Ok! Thanks for the advice! Everything is working!! EXCEPT.... the water pump. I filled the tank and turned it on and it heats up, pressure is good, steam is good.. just won't fill the tank back up. Manual button doesn't seem to work either. Any ideas?

Do you hear the pump when pressing the arrow?  It only ran for a few seconds and then never again?  Do you have access to another ulka pump for testing?

The pump does work.. it comes on when you press the brew button just no water comes out and it is not filling the tank when I gets low. I think there is an air pocket.

In plumbed-in cases the pump will be primed from a few bars of main pressure.

You can also manually prime the pump with a syringe-type tool (turkey baster) to push the air out, ie when plugged to external tank lacking pressure.
