One year ago I sent the following post to the Extropolis list, I did not change one word. One year from now I intend to send this same message to this list yet again, provided our AI overlords allow it.

Happy New Year all.

I predict that a paper reporting positive psi results will NOT appear in Nature or Science in the next year. This may seem an outrageous prediction, after all psi is hardly a rare phenomena, millions of people with no training have managed to observe it, or claim they have. And I am sure the good people at Nature and Science would want to say something about this very important and obvious part of our natural world if they could, but I predict they will be unable to find anything interesting to say about it.You might think my prediction is crazy, like saying a waitress with an eighth grade education in Duluth Minnesota can regularly observe the Higgs boson with no difficulty but the highly trained Physicists at CERN in Switzerland cannot. Nevertheless I am confident my prediction is true because my ghostly spirit guide Mohammad Duntoldme spoke to me about it in a dream.

PS: I am also confident I can make this very same prediction one year from today.

I predict that Donald Trump will NOT be praised by AOC, Bernie
Sanders, Nancy Pelosi or Elizabeth Warren in the next year.

I agree, that seems like a pretty safe prediction. But what does that have to do with the subject of this thread?

It is exactly the same kind of prediction. I also predict that the NRA
will NOT push for new gun regulations in the next year.

Well yes, my prediction about an overwhelming scientific consensus that has been in place for well over a century and your predictions are both very safe, very conservative predictions, but I don't see your point, please spell it out.

Come on John, you are smarter than that and understand my point perfectly. AOC & friends would NEVER praise Trump regardless of whatever good things he does. Establishment journals like Nature and Science would NEVER publish papers on positive evidence of paranormal phenomena, regardless of quality.

I think that's probably true but it's hard to be certain because there are so few good things that Trump has done that it's difficult to test. Off the top of my head I can only think of two good things about Trump:

1) Trump got rid of the penny.
2) Trump does not have an irrational hatred of nuclear power plants, and that's important in this age of AI as we approach the Singularity.

Unfortunately that second virtue is canceled out by Trump's irrational hatred of wind turbines and solar power. Wait a minute… I just thought of three more good things about Trump:

3) Trump is old.
4) Trump is fat.
5) Trump loves greasy junk food.

Establishment journals like Nature and Science would NEVER publish papers on positive evidence of paranormal phenomena, regardless of quality.

Sorry Giulio but that is a ridiculous statement. It is the dream of experimental physicists to conduct experiments that theoretical physicists cannot explain, and it is the dream of highly respected journals like Science and Nature to publish such findings and they have done exactly that in the past.

The outcome of the 1887 Michelson-Morley experiment contradicted all the then known laws of physics but the experiment was conducted with such skill and precision that the results were published and the consensus of the scientific community was that the results were correct even though there was no explanation for it until Einstein came along in 1905. In 1938 experimental physicists discovered that U-235 split in half when it was struck by a neutron and theoretical physicists of the time did not understand how or why that could happen, yet the scientific community agreed that it did happen. And a 1998 astronomers discovered that the universe was accelerating, at the time nobody could explain how that could possibly be and nobody can do so to this day, but far from being ostracized the people who discovered it received Nobel prizes. And it was exactly the same story for those who discovered that Dark Matter existed even though nobody knows what the hell it is.

If there were a rigorous well conducted experiment (and not something that a third rate street magician could reproduce) that gave positive evidence for paranormal phenomena then any scientific journal in the world would be delighted to publish it and I would be delighted to read it. I wish Psi was real because that would be great fun, I wish that a lot of comic book science was real, I wish Harry Potter's world was real, but wishing does not make it so.

If this list had existed 150 years ago we could be having almost this exact same conversation because the field of paranormal investigation has not advanced one nanometer in all that time, there would be only two differences:

1) In 1875 we'd be communicating by telegraph instead of the Internet.
2) We wouldn't be calling it paranormal or PSI or ESP, we'd be calling it Spiritualism.
