An experimental general purpose AI made byOpenAI just won a Gold Medal in the 2025 International Mathematics Olympiad, the AI was working under the same time constraints that the human contestants were. This level of expertise has surprised everyone, including the people who made it at OpenAI. If you don't believe me then take a look at a graph of the betting market about the chances of an AI winning Gold by the end of 2025. They sure got that wrong!

It turns out OpenAI wasn't the only one, an AI from Google also won a gold medal in the International Mathematical Olympiad and it got the exact same score that the AI from OpenAI got. OpenAI wasn't supposed to announce the results until Monday but they jumped the gun, Google played by the rules and didn't start bragging about it until Monday.
