Saluton Pat,
> From afar, I forwarded your email about Eo classes at SU concluding due to classroom access after 4:30pm to Chuck Mays at Esperantic Studies Fdn and to Humphrey Tonkin. Both were sad to hear the news but so impressed by your extraordinary tenure. I hope that I was correct when I added that students could receive academic credit if they were willing to register and pay tuition. That's what I remember . . .
Yes. I have given out credits, but nobody has asked about that in a
long time. I get (hmmm... used to get) many people showing up to the
first class, and maybe the second. Then, suddenly they realize they're
at Stanford and there's a ton of work expected from them. That and the
fact that i was limited to giving 2 credits per Quarter, limited the
interest of most everybody. - I did have one guy show up one Spring
Quarter, who said "I came 4 years ago, didn't have time, i'm
graduating in weeks. Please help me to get started and i'll continue
on my own." Okazis. :)
> Chuck reached out to Eo-USA to see if they would cover the classroom cost. Inter ni, I remember that a while ago you were trying to retire from teaching. Somehow, you were persuaded to continue.
I believe i had been doing it for about 20 years when i decided
that i'd "retire" after 25. By the time i got around to calculating,
it had been 28 years! :) Basically, i finally felt that i had "gotten
the hang of it". I love watching the knowledge bits "click" in the
beginners... and my more advanced students have been some of the best
people i've ever known.
>At any rate, your students are most fortunate to have you. I have slipped back into krokodilujo, although Chuck persuaded me to join the ESF advisory board. In my self-defense, I am writing a dissertation at Trinity College Dublin and have ZERO time . . . Trio, if anyone suggests that you undertake an m.phil. degree, full-time, at a highly-rated European university, aged 72 years, SAY NO. Register for the life-long-learning program for senior citizens>attend classes and enjoy the lectures & discussions>read the materials>DO NOT AGREE TO WRITE 5000-word academic papers, including footnotes and bibliographic references per OUP Style Manual, or 20,000-word dissertations. My best friend in Ireland has told me that if I am admitted to any more graduate programs, he will take me to the psychiatric clinic at St John of God's Hospital for a dementia evaluation.
:) Bona amiko! You've always been very impressive in your work,
especially for community.
>Once done with my BIG PAPER, I shall return to
edukado.net and reclaim la verdan stelon.
That would be good fortune for
edukado.net .
> MEANWHILE, Eo-USA might be in touch to offer 1) financial support for unlocking the room, ...
It was an institutional decision to not keep the building open in
the evenings. I don't know what they do there now, but that place used
to be hot... a lot of activity, late into the evening. I was the only
one left after Covid. I'm still looking for alternatives.
> Amike, elkore to you and Sandi,
Thank you. I hope you are getting well-deserved gratitude. You're
so smart and big-hearted... sounds like a condition to be looked at.
This would be better said in esperanto. :)
