The kanjidic entry for this just says "orangutan". However I think it also means "red" or "dark red". See https://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/word/kanji/%e7%8c%a9/. This is used for example in the name of the "scarlet skimmer", a kind of dragonfly.

Most references just have orangutan for 猩 but I agree that "dark red"
fits and has some currency. I'll add it.
