After a great job by Stuart McGraw, the "New Generation" (NG) version
of the JMdict database and editing system is ready for implementation.
The NG version has had considerable discussion in recent months and
represents the first significant modification of the dictionary
structure and distribution in over 20 years.

A description of the NG proposal is at
https://www.edrdg.org/jmdemo/web/doc/2026-03-xmlng.html (Note that
the Pitch Accent component is not included at present.)

We will shortly be moving to the new system. While the changeover
takes place, the daily distribution of the XML editions of JMdict and
JMnedict, as well as the EDICT and ENAMDICT versions, will be stalled.
Once the changeover is completed, the distributions will resume in the
original (pre-NG) versions. The new NG versions will be progressively
added to the distribution. (The updated system can produce both the
legacy and NG versions of the files, which will greatly assist the
changeover.)

There will be a further announcement once the changeover is about to begin.

I am about to install the JMdict NG changes. As there are updates to
both the software and the database, there will be a period when they
are out of synch, and database access will result in error messages.
If a problem occurs, I may have to roll both of them back to the
pre-NG version.

It would be a good idea to avoid proposing edits, etc. until I have
completed the changeover.

OK, all done. We can resume edits.
For the time being, the distributed versions will be the pre-NG ones.
i'll add the NG versions to the set afterwards.

I'd like to add that documentation for what has changed in the web pages
is available at:

https://www.edrdg.org/jmwsgi/web/doc/2026-03-update.html

and a reformatted version of Jim's _JMdict: Next Generation_ document
that describes the changes (that will be coming) in the XML files at:

https://www.edrdg.org/jmwsgi/web/doc/2026-03-xmlng.html

I am not sure what you meant, but the distributed files
(https://www.edrdg.org/pub/Nihongo/JMdict.gz,
https://www.edrdg.org/pub/Nihongo/edict2u.gz etc.) from today contain
data exactly identical to files from yesterday, including date of
creation 2026-04-19. This is probably not what you intended. Maybe a
script used to generate these files needs to be fixed.

No, that was intentional. I paused the extraction scripts while I checked them, so the upload scripts simply uploaded yesterday's extractions.

The updated ones should be there tomorrow.
