MP4 length limit?

Hi all,

I’ve been asked to create a compilation video of over 200 small (circa 3 minutes) videos.

Is there any limitation on the length of an mp4? It’ll round out at something like 11 hours of 1080i.

I don’t think so, though I’ve only done some a bit over 2 hours. But do they really want it all in one file? Depending on the purpose it might be easier to view and navigate several shorter files.

The other issue can be the file data size if the delivery storage format has a size limit, like 4gb on the old Fat-32 - you will be way over that depending on compression ratio.

Yep, they really want one big file. It’s a whole bunch of small product videos that we’ve made for their website, all played back to back at trade shows and in-store.

I’ll be working NTFS and I guess I’ll have to be supplying it on a hard drive.

Hi Tony,

I recently exported a Richard Burton film called "Wagner" that is almost 8 hours long.
Original media was XDCam and exported as mp4 after some editing.
It took about 3 hours to export including the time it took to compile the audio with the video after the actual export.
It does take a while, so you'll need to be patient. I sent the sequence to ME and let it do all the work.
File size is 54GB.

Always good to hear from everyone.
I would have loved to see how DS would have progressed up to today.
I still miss it.

I’ve seen that film! The only line I can remember from the whole thing was after an inventor was trying to sell Wagner on his new instrument, the clarinet. “Nasty Squeaky Thing!” was Wagner’s response.

As for DS it makes me smile how all the MC editors who were decrying having all the finishing tools in one box are now driving Resolve with… well, you get the idea 😀
