Hi,

While I tried to use the laplacian smoothing filter for meshing. I am encountering an issue.

Figure 1 (No laplacian filter applied)

The rectangular steps could be clearly seen in the right figure

Figure 2 (With Laplacian filter, with no Outer lambda)

The laplacian filter applies to the interior and the outer rectangular steps remain as such ( as seen in the middle figure).
This introduces local stress concentration factors in the FE simulations

Figure 3 (With Laplacian filter, with  Outer lambda values)
The outer lambda values introduces an out of plane curvature as seen in leftmost figure

I need help to remove the stress concentrators at the outside surfaces in Figure 2, Is there any way to do that?

Thanks,
Prithivi

the Laplacian filter has known issues with shrinkage of the volume when
applied which is why DREAM.3D introduced the ability to fix the
outermost points during the smoothing process. An idea you might want to
try is to run a pair of Laplacian filters with differing values for
lambda and different number of iterations and see if that helps your
stress concentrations.
The DREAM.3D developers have also added a new option to in the latest
nightly builds to apply Taubin smoothing during the Laplacian filtering
process which helps alleviate the shrinkage problem and may help your
stress concentration issues. The latest nightly builds are always
located at:

Thanks Mike!

I tried your both suggestions but it didnt help me

1) using a pair of laplacian filters

2) using the taubin smoothing

Thanks,
Prithivi
