Hello! My friend jon was telling me how much fun he was having with this interesting and very cheap wireless metro area network system called Meshtastic. So I set up a node, and now it works … but actually, nobody talks about much of anything except whether or not their node is working. :)

Is anybody here playing around with Meshtastic? or is anybody playing around with other uses of LoRA in the Portland area?

It’s kinda obviously not necessary to reinvent the wheel to communicate wirelessly if you already have a cell phone. But a lot of people talk about LoRA as a great way to communicate in emergency situations, like that tsunami they keep promising us …

Here’s my 30-minute radio enclosure hack! The radio bits were about $30. (The pill bottle was about $100, but it came with pills in it. :)

Oh hey, that's a pretty neat solution for a meshtastic box.

I've been really interested in trying to put together an absurdly long range meshtastic network for some reason lately, but funds have stopped me from actually doing it. Any idea what the coverage is like around these parts?

I'm all the way out on the coast now, so it's probably a lot more useful out there where those pesky trees and mountains get in the way of cell signal.

It’s set up in my window and it can see >200 other nodes! My node name is “killingsworth #17” for now.

I have a couple of devices but I'm in a bad location - an apartment complex in Beaverton with no line of sight beyond a couple of other buildings in the complex. I was going to wander around town and see if I could connect in the summer but never got around to it. Related: I have too many hobbies.
