Disappearing desktop icons

Debian Stretch system
amd64 system
A couple of weeks ago I updated my system and all of my desktop icons
start looking as shown in attachment.
Anyone have an idea what could cause this. I have looked thru the log
files and have found nothing. Rebooting doesn't help.
