I am fairly new to this field but I've become interested in the amoeba due to recent news. I would like to experiment with a ways of getting rid of it from soil and water. However, I'm certain I wouldn't be able to get my hands on it (I'm not certain I'd even want to) due to being a lone ranger so I'm wondering how I could identify something that would act similarly but would be less (preferably non) dangerous? I plan on doing a lot more research before trying anything but I'd like to know that some day I could apply my research somehow.

I may be completely going the wrong direction here as I am a complete noob but I'm just toying around with things.

Thanks,
Alex

Amoebas are very neat little things, and most of them won't try to eat your brain.  I'd suggest you get some pond water and a microscope and see if you can find some.  They're fairly common.  An obligatory word of caution:  since you really won't know what species you're seeing, wear gloves just in case.

If you don't live near a pond, you can also buy a live culture of amoebas here:

Have fun, and feel free to report your observations.
