Dog DNA Analysis/Matching Equipment

Hello,

          I am trying to create a DNA database of dogs in our community so that I can help identify owners who don't pick up after their dogs. 

There are some private companies which offer these services  but its expensive. 

Being a dog lover and a owner myself, my mission is to keep the community healthy for dogs. 

Can anyone help me understand what kind of equipment is needed for DNA identification and I am programming savvy so I can build a db using it.

Hi!
You'll need a PCR machine (thermocycler), polymerase enzyme, dNTPs, primers, and a gel electrophoresis box+ supply+ illuminator. and some dna dye like ethidium bromide or better midori green.

There is a page on DIYbio where can I find a step by set process or perhaps a book you can recommend?

Also most importanly is there is way I can enter into database automatically or need to enter manually and compare later manually?

You can probably do what the crime labs do, use RFLP or STRs... or
maybe look into SNP assays.

Here's a canine SNP kit, but you'd need to learn how to prepare the
samples (DNA extraction, cleanup, SNP-kit-directed specifics) and then
you'd have to find a place that would read the chips for you
(basically a really nice blacklight and a camera setup).
