1. Keep coming back to this group and ask as many questions as you can think of!

2. Read up as much of this until you get sick, then ask more
questions, then repeat:
http://diyhpl.us/wiki/diybio/faq/books/
http://diyhpl.us/wiki/diybio/faq/educational/

3. meet local people if you can, face to face conversation can aid
communication since its inherently multi-media

There are lot's of different biology computer applications, it depends
on the specific sub-field. You mention synBio, but even in that
sub-field there are many different problems that have completely
different algorithms and purpose. There is CAD for DNA parts,
sequencing assembly, protein folding prediction, gene functional
analysis, physical modelling/simulations.

Read up some stuff and get back to us with what you think about it,
there are lots of people here from different fields, so lots of
potential inspiration.

Hi Alex!

You're kind of right, it is programming life.

Depending on where you live you can even (legally) do some basic experiments in your garage.

I feel the same.

That was my motivation from crossing over from IT infrastructure work to biotech, or maybe trying to combine the two fields of biotech and infrastructure management apps....

There surely are interested people... Just gotta find them, and maybe start a community lab.

The best resource I have come across for the basic biology is the EdX course called "Secrets of Life".

You could watch this series of biology videos from MIT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnpCMgtDPgk&list=SPF83B8D8C87426E44
You could read this ebook about genetics: http://gene.bio.jhu.edu/bm2whole.pdf (might be a tad advanced for beginners. I don't know your level)
You will also need a good grasp of organic chemistry and of biochemistry
