That sounds like SOS Ventures is basically just placing their companies inside Cathal's home to steal his reagents... I hope he is getting some equity out of that arrangement.

Can we please not let 'hackubator' become a thing.

@Bryan: shh.... you're giving away all our secrets.

As much as I'd love the company, it looks like Synbio-AXLR8R will be operating out of University College Cork's incubator space, which just happens to be ~2.5km from my lab via a nice country walk, or ~1.5km from my house. :)

Really they could pay me in other-biohackers. It's lonely being the only synthetic biologist in Ireland (tm)*..

* I think.

@Jacob - Nature loved the "Hackubators" (not sure who coined the term) but I'm guessing they'll be making it a thing!

It seems like the Boston area has a lot of catching up to do.  Interesting read thanks for posting.

You won't catch me crossing that border soon! Just wish we had more interest on my little island, given how much biotech gets done here. At least we have a high ratio of hackerspaces per capita..

For the record for better or worse, "Hackubator" is another one of the Joe Jackson Neologisms.  It actually came up back in 2009 when we were joking around riffing off the BioCurious name...encouraging Hackubation "Hackubating furiously"  with friends.

I didn't realize "Hackubator" was a Joe Jackson creation, you've got the market cornered for new DIY Bio memes, first Biocurious and now Hackubators!

I'm a hoping biohacker that's graphically inclined creates some Joe Jackson meme's so that we can spread it around the interwebs :P

I like the term "Germinator" which was suggested by a visitor to the Carlsbad lab as a play on startup incubator.  An incubator could yield better results than a hacker(slacker)-space.
