Feed the Burg is taking a two-month hiatus as it re-evaluates ways it could garner more volunteers and donations.
The
nonprofit has been feeding people for free at Eagle Park in downtown
Roseburg every Saturday for the last five years. It will cease
operations in June and July, then begin again in August.
For the
last year, Feed the Burg has been run almost entirely by one person:
Chelsey Brown, a mother of four who just recently started working
full-time at a local company.
Brown has a handful of volunteers that she can count on regularly, but otherwise, she’s on her own.
“Nobody realizes how much it actually takes to run this every weekend,” Brown said. “I’ve put a lot of my own money into it.”
Donations
and volunteers increased a little over holidays, she said, but they
took a dramatic drop this spring for various reasons. Some volunteers
are experiencing health issues, she said, and others are going on
vacations.
Brown normally gets donations from local restaurants
and churches. Supplies generally spike over the holidays, she said, but
fade come summer.
“I’ve set up a Go Fund Me (account) to get
people to step up a little; two people have donated about $30,” she
said. “Nobody has any money.”
She is not sure why the volunteer
and food pools are running dry. She hopes the two months will help her
and other volunteers outline solutions.
“It’s almost frustrating,” Brown said. “I always hear, ‘I want to help.’ But then it’s not there.”
“It’s hard, “ she continued. “It’s really hard. I want it to continue so bad.”
Feed the Burg will start again on the first Saturday of August.
“It’s not stopping,” Brown said. “I’m not giving up on it.”
