All,

We received notice today that Google did not select Dataverse/GDCC as an organization for the 2020 Summer of Code program. If you’re interested, or know students who are, the list of accepted organizations is at https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/organizations . Given the relatively small number of comparable organizations accepted, we’ll have to decide whether it is worth applying next year /how to make the potential for Dataverse to revolutionize scientific research clearer!

Thanks to all who contributed ideas and/or agreed to mentor!

Bummer.

How will we decide whether to apply next year or not?

Was the application a lot of work?

Did we get constructive feedback on our application that we can use to craft a better application in the future?

A friend of mine recently linked to a write up on what makes a good Google Summer of Code project[1]. He's one of the founders of Public Lab which was just accepted for their 7th year in a row. I've invited him to give a tech talk at IQSS about open source and maybe I'll see if he'll let us record it so I can put it on DataverseTV. :) Anyway, Public Lab is extremely friendly to newcomers (and all about science!) so if anyone out there needs a break from hacking on Dataverse and wants to participate in Google Summer of Code, I strongly recommend working them. Come to think of it, this "Community Toolbox Overhaul" project would be a great one to work on because I think it would be nice to install Community Toolbox for the Dataverse community: https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/archive/2019/projects/5284218689552384/ . I tried recently but had a little trouble: https://gitter.im/publiclab/publiclab/archives/2019/11/27?at=5ddeddfad75ad3721d11ea8a . I especially like how Community Toolbox lets you highlight recent contributors, including their picture from GitHub. I'll attach a screenshot of what I mean from https://code.publiclab.org (their installation of Community Toolbox).

Oh, and don't forget there's also Google Season of Docs, which is newer I just clicked some links from this post of mine but it's hard for me to tell if they're doing it again in 2020 or not: https://groups.google.com/d/msg/dataverse-community/KSmmu6C7H1M/6xQry-kSAgAJ :)

Ultimately it’s a community decision. The application was not that hard, but it did take some time (and that amount of effort was unsuccessful J). There are examples on the web showing the kinds of questions that are asked, from basic org description to answers about the procedures the org will use to manage mentors and students.

We did not get feedback beyond that we were not accepted. My general sense from the list of accepted projects is that emphasizing user base and community size is important, as is the commitment to and ability to successfully mentor students. Overall, I think it is just very competitive and there are many orgs who have been involved for many years, so it probably takes some extra effort/luck to break in.

Hi,

I think it would be great to be part of it, and I would be happy to help with next years proposal.

Regards, Stefan

I also think it would be great -- this is a particularly good type of community-fit since there are many mentors likely to be focused on / able to give topical feedback on whatever a student is working on.   //S  (former gsoc mentor for a few years)
