Hi Dataverse Users,

We have recently received a few questions about how metadata will be handled in future versions of Dataverse. Since we are currently working on version 4.0 it would be really helpful to receive your feedback on how you would like us to handle metadata for this upcoming and future versions of the application.

I would like to share with you the metadata plans for 4.0. The tables below try to show what we use in 3.x and what we want to have for 4.0 and are organized conceptually by what we are calling Metadata Blocks (outlined in this document: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1iukJMAC-C1gh8MA_DHY_49akDTJXAi1_B_5is6hTuI8/edit?usp=sharing).

1) General Dataset Level Metadata (two tabs)

2) Domain-Specific Dataset Level Metadata (three tabs: social science, astrophysics, biomedical)

3) File-Level Metadata (tabs:  Tabular data (w/ variable level), FITS files, General files)

4) Dataset Terms of Use / Licensing (we havent had a chance to really look at this part yet so feedback would be really helpful here)

Please let us know as soon as possible (to make sure we get this for 4.0) if you have any questions, concerns or feedback for anything you think is missing, unclear, or if you believe any other fields should be mandatory/recommended/optional.

Thanks for looking this over!

All the best,
Eleni

I've been meaning to download these spreadsheets as CSV and run https://github.com/dinedal/textql on them.

Regarding 4) Licensing: Will it be possible to configure various licensing models (like CC licenses or Open Data Commons) in advance in order to present a select box at the input screen?

We strongly support your Feature request

Hi Leonhard,

Regarding the Dataset Licensing feature for 4.0: We are currently working on designing this feature for users to be able to easily select which license suit their dataset needs. Aside from the CC and Open Data Commons licenses do you foresee any other licenses that would be helpful to include in our list of options? We will also make sure that users can put in their own custom Terms of Use and Data Usage Agreements.

Also, thank you for your vote on the Language field feature request; this will be seriously considered for a future release.

Best,
Eleni

No. To be honest, we actually have difficulties to see any advantages in using the Open Data Commons licenses (compared to the CC licenses).
