Respected sir and ma'am

I have received a comment in revision to a manuscript by the Editor of a US-based Journal. It says-

"Please provide information about the IRB approval obtained to conduct research with human subjects."

My study involves data collection from Indian investors using questionnaires. There is no clinical information sought. I read about the requirements for IRB approvals worldwide but there is no clear mention about whether it needs to be taken for a study conducted in India. Moreover, my institute does not hold an 'institutional review board' for such approvals.

Kindly advise.

Hello,
In your review you require to have IRB approval, find the nearest iim or IIT they have this body with that approval journal will not accept the manuscript, it's must now a days recently in my study i have send for IRB approval it's a long list of questions which you have to answer, even at department level there is a review board from your university who will give you this approval.

Thank you for your email sir.

I have this query that whether these approvals require a fee or not. Also, how much time do they usually take and does the date of approval also constitute an issue given the fact that i have already conducted the survey.

Thanks for your valuable time

It's worrisome sometime to think in indian universities there is no such department or unit to look into studies involving human subjects. (It's the IRB that decides if your study qualifies as human subjects research and if yes, the level of risk associated with it and the proper documentation/protocol to conduct the study. )

In your defence you may say something like the study did not ask any identifiable information from the respondents and pose no more risk than an individual might experience in their daily life. We collected the data anonymously and all the identifiable information was managed in a separated locked computer that only the research personnel have access to. We informed the participants about their rights and confidentiality associated with the study. We also conveyed to them that their participation is completely voluntary.

Hope it helps and good luck 🤞

Please correct me if I am wrong, once the data is collected they will treat it as secondary data, and secondary data analysis usually qualifies as exempt

If you decide to submit an IRB application to get the approval, my suggestion would be to submit it as secondary data analysis. Much easier and quicker I think.

Hello,
In simple approval should have been taken before sending your questions,
For payment
1. No payment is required.
2. What to do with this data, once you have collected. I don't know please ask experts like our respected neeraj sir and other team members.

Thank you so much for your valuable insights. Since the data is
collected directly from the respondents, not from any agency for data
collection, will have to report it as primary data. However, grateful
to both of you for your guidance.

Hello Manisha
I understand your problem. I would like to let you know that currently almost all the journals publishing human data require IRB approval be it clinical population or not. If you are doing Ph.D., you may ask for approval in written form from your DAC members, thats what is done in IIT KGP as far as I know. There is a form that you have to fill and get it signed. You may also ask for a letter.
Regards
