Coyote bit Coco on hillside path connecting Campus and Olympus

Hi All,

Coco got bitten by a coyote this morning at around 8:30 on the hillside path connecting Campus Drive and Olympus. She's ok (got rabies booster and antibiotics). 

The coyote appeared to have been coming from the neighborhood on Olympus. Be extra careful these days. I've seen a lot more coyote activity in general in the neighborhood and Tilden.

Hello !

Wow tell more about how the encounter happened?   Did Coco approach the coyote?  Or other way around?

The coyote have a den in the steep ravine that runs down the hill near the end of Campus down to the Labs.  They are ACTIVE.   

Thanks for the heads up.   Keep small pets inside!

Our dog Luja would love to go down there to rout out that pack ……. It’s her job as a flock guardian !

Thanks for letting us know. I hope Coco isn’t too badly hurt, must have been scary for all of you. 

Lately, one or two coyotes have been showing up each morning right outside our house on Parnassus Road, eating the wild plums that are just starting to ripen. That’s why you hear our dog barking in the mornings.

Thanks for the well wishes, everyone! Coco is doing better but still healing. 

Some additional context in case it helps your decision making: We had unfortunate timing re: crossing of paths with the coyote. The coyote ran from the street onto the trail right in front of us, and because we let Coco off leash on that trail, Coco was startled and started barking and chasing the Coyote just before it bit her. Coco has seen coyotes in the distance before and not chased them, so we got unlucky with the close contact, especially because it was not that early in the morning.

Glad Coco is doing well! 

Additional coyote story: My wife had just taken our trash bins up to the street (90 Parnassus) on a Sunday evening back in early June when she saw movement out of the corner of her eye in the street, turns her head to look, and there walking by the end of our driveway heading down into the 'Parnassus dip'  less than 10 feet away were two coyotes both looking at her and just ambling on down into the dip and then disappearing. Nothing threatening or alarming happened but very startling!
