Hi all,

in the interests of being constructive, I am asking for people to reply
to this thread expressing their level of interest in having access to
the space outside of regular hours. I hope this will serve as motivation
to the people who are donating their time and resources to getting the
door system up and running.

I haven't been a member for long. I was hoping to use the space to
further my small business aspirations - it's expensive having to keep
one of every tool and also pay rent on a workshop. But if I have to wait
a week every time I want to use something at the space, I have no choice
but to ignore the space and do it all myself. The opportunity to cut
down on duplication is wasted. This means fewer of my tools left at the
space, less of my time available to spend on projects for the space (and
less return to me on that time spent).

The one week estimate above is actually a bit optimistic. There are
weeks when I'm not available at the open times, and for health reasons I
often arrive much later than planned. I suspect there are people lurking
on this list who are permanently in that situation. More access means
more people with an incentive to become financial members.

I know there are varying levels of responsibility amongst the
membership. Some people are happy just being social and not being there
on their own. But I'm used to being able to swipe myself into a
laboratory whenever I have the motivation. I'm not working on hobby
projects, any tools that I become dependent on I need to be able to use
at any time.

I propose an intermediate level of access where you can be trusted to
stay in the space once it's been opened, and then let yourself out
without the option of getting back in. That way you can print everything
you came to print, even if the printers needed some work and there were
other people in line.

So, please reply with your level of interest in getting independent
access to the space.

Have fun,
Darren

We recently did a poll. Did we publish the summary results ... or
forget / get drowned under other stuff ?

However, nothing wrong with another survey (different / more focused).

It is pretty well established that this needs to get done a.s.a.p.

I'd recommend using one of the many free on-line polling web-sites that
helps manage this process.

Hi Everyone

This question was one of the focuses of the survey we published a month or so ago.  Unfortunately I haven't had time to publish the results, there were enough "personalised" responses that the anonymous poll became less so and the editing needed took a backseat to personal and more pressing demands on my time.

Having said that, I can give a synopsis on the result and a brief outline on what the committee has been doing to make it happen.

~80% of respondents would like this kind of access.  That's about what we expected and it was great to get solid data re-enforcing the opinions we already had on the committee.

So what are we doing about it?

While the technical question of creating an access system that couples with our membership system is quite large, in some respects it's secondary to having clearly defined expectations of "what the community expects of you when you have open access."  This sort of agreement is important both from a legal (insurance) point of view and because it outlines how an individual is responsible for community property that others rely on.

That agreement is pretty close to it's final form.  It's in addition to the "Rules and Policies" document we released a while ago and also forms the basis of what we expect from our Duty Officers.  It has been debated, revised, extended, shrunk and debated again by the entire committee, a pretty daunting task for a team of volunteers really, but we are doing our level best to make something that is clear, concise and has as low an impact on how people use the space as possible.

That said, there is still a little bit of a wait to go.  If anyone is interested in helping it move along contact the committee directly.  We can either put you in contact with the guys working on the technical side or, of course, you can help us beta test our policies as a Duty Officer (CCHS needs YOU!)
