How to enable JMX monitoring?

Hi trying to get JMX working but can't seem to...

export JMX_PORT=9999

then

sudo kafka-server-start /etc/kafka/server.properties

But it doesn't seem to be open. I don't have any firewalls or specific security enables on my dev box...

Using Confluent Platform 3.0.0 specifically.

I doubt that environment variable is making it through the sudo.

Can you do a 'ps aux | grep java' and check the jvm options of the broker process, if the port setting is passed correctly?

I modified the kafka-server-start and added it there seems to work. I guess I should be able to run with sudo if I want to really...
