Just a couple notes on birds following on previous threads.

In following the recent Woodhouse's Scrub Jay theme, I had at least 1 causing a racket in my yard on Saturday afternoon. I think there were 2, but it (they?) got into my neighbors dense pines, got skulky and disappeared before I could be certain.  I live in Littleton, by Clement Park and Columbine HS in eastern Jeff Co.

Right about the same time scrub jays were being reports in Arapahoe Co. (30 Aug), I had 2 Woodhouse's flying eastbound past my office window in Lakewood at Union Blvd and 2nd (by St Anthony's hospital).  (Thank goodness for conference calls).  This location is a little further from the foothills than my house (about 5 miles), but my first around here.

This morning, Monday, I had a pair pf Pygmy Nuthatches in the same spruce across the street from my house where I had them on 20 Aug.  I haven't heard/seen any since the first encounter.

Good birding,

Regarding Scrub Jay sightings. I looked out around 7:00 am into my western Centennial backyard and saw a jay on top of a shepherd's crook. I assumed it was a Woodhouse's because of CoBirds posts. However, I just saw some images on the CFO Facebook page of Pinyon Jays, and I think my bird looked more like one of them. My bird had no white, black, or grey on its back. It was a brilliant blue. Is it possible it could have been a Pinyon? Or would that be rather rare to see one around here?

A Pinyon Jay would be much more unusual at Centennial.

Over the past few weeks in the Ken Caryl and Deer Creek area -- where the scrub-jay is resident in the oak and scrub habitats -- I have seen some evidence of movement by Woodhouse's Scrub-Jay, e.g., loose strings of individuals flying along the hogback ridges (mostly southbound) and individuals turning up in spots where they are usually absent.

We also had a yard bird Wooodhouse's Scrub-Jay and yard bird Red-breasted Nuthatch this week. We have lived here in Highlands Ranch near the intersection of University and Colorado about 10 months. Yes I know they are both north/south streets but strange things happen to Denver streets when they come to Highlands Ranch. We still have 2 non-male Broad-tailed Hummingbirds coming to our feeders.

Not this year but last fall, I had a Woodhouse's S-J near the First Creek @ DEN Open Space trail. Spotted in the ramshackle horse-stall "barnyard" area just off 56th Avenue, where the trail runs east of Pena Blvd and the commuter rail bridges.
