Can I get some confirmation of WHICH Centennial Park is referenced? There's one in Englewood, and then there's the new one by the Centennial City buildings east of I-25 on Arapahoe?

Good question: it isn't readily identified. It is in Arapahoe County slightly east of Federal and on Union Avenue (which is 1/2 mile north of Belleview).

When I struggle to find directions to a site mentioned on Cobirds, especially ones with common names, like "Bear Creek," "Deer Creek,"

or "Animadversion Creek," I hop on the CFO County birding website. At the top of the page is a link named, "Find a Site."

There I found this handy description:

Centennial Park
Description - This medium sized pond is probably the best pond for waterbirds in the area. Large flocks of dabblers and divers can be found here during the colder months, and keep an eye out for grebes and maybe even the stray loon or two. Gull flocks could potentially hold an interesting species or two during the winter, and who knows what rarity (maybe even a Prothonotary Warbler some cold November day) could show up at this seldom-birded location.
Habitat - Pond, Park
Directions - Take the Santa Fe exit off of C-470 and head north on Santa Fe for 5 miles to Union Ave. Take a left onto Union Ave and head across the South Platte River to Decatur St in 0.8 miles. If you reach Federal Blvd you have gone too far. Turn right onto Decatur and head north to the parking lot for the park, on the right.

Posting a "RFI" on Cobirds works pretty well too. A general rule is, "The more exciting the rarity, the less likely it is that the

Here is another suggestion for confirming directions for most of these rarities; one that I use all the time.

 

Go to the CFO Website http://cfobirds.org/   as Joe suggests.  In the lower right corner of the home page is a list generated automatically from eBird showing most recent eBird observations from Colorado that have required additional details as part of their submission to eBird.  Each of these sightings comes with species and county information and a notation that shows if the observation has been reviewed by an eBird reviewer (typically a timing issue).  However, there is also a map function.  Click on “map” and you will go to a Google Maps site showing where the bird was observed.  There are a couple of caveats, however; first, the map pushpin sites the general area (Centennial Park, in this case) not where in the park, and second, sometimes the observer has reported the observation with a generic county or even state location.  In this case, however, Centennial Park is shown as off Union between S. Santa Fe Dr. and S. Federal.

 

By the way, if you are really interested in exploring rarities across the nation there is a change tab that lets you pick a different state.  Going to Texas for Thanksgiving?  Don’t miss the rare and illusive Ring-billed Gull reported in Webb County (Laredo) yesterday!  Or you could find that the last reports for Amazon Kingfisher were from Saturday.

Gary (and others),

I apologize for not leaving more details about how to get there - I myself wasn't sure where it was when I first saw the reports.  My savior was signing up for the rarity reports from ebird where each sighting triggers an email with who made the sighting and links to a map of the sighting, the checklist for observer, photos if available, and notes from the observer.  

If you don't mind a lot of e-mails you can set them to come within an hour of a rarity sighting by county.  I hope that helps for the future-
