Good evening everyone,

I was taking a look at the British Library catalogue, hoping to read out some books on Churchill at some point. To my disappointment it appeared that the “Churchill Documents” published by Hillsdale College Press were not there. There are a few companion volumes to the official biography but none of the recent ones (e.g. none of the volumes co-edited by Larry P. Arnn were there, according to the online catalogue). As the British Library is a legal deposit library I wondered if perhaps the “Churchill Documents” had not yet been published in the U.K.

Can anyone shed light on this?

Andy

Dear Andy,

I am not sure they have been published in the UK but they are certainly available for consultation by appointment at the Churchill Archives Centre (though are closed for building work till 7 Feb).

Best wishes,

Allen

Dear All,

Apparently the latest - and last - in the series, N°23, now published, is
not yet available from Amazon UK, but all the others, up to N°22 (at a
bargain price !), are :

https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=churchill+documents&i=stripbooks&ref=nb_sb_noss_1

If you want to consult rather than buy, the COPAC catalogue of all UK
academic libraries will tell you which volumes are available in a library
near your home :

https://discover.libraryhub.jisc.ac.uk/search?author=&title=Churchill+Documents&publisher=&publisher-place=&isn=&date=&subject=&map-scale=&keyword=

Dear All

Some years ago I asked the Churchill group if they knew what became of Roy Howells after Churchill's death. Nobody seemed to know much about him.Are we any more enlightened now?
Curiously, he seems to have disappeared from history. He was born in 1928 so might still be with us.

 Andy,

The Churchill Documents through Volume 22 (1945-51) are available on Amazon UK, and #22 is nicely priced at £30.64. I expect they will list the final Volume 23 when their supply arrives.

Dear All,

I received my copy of the final volume in The Churchill Documents (# 23) this morning.

When I first started to get interested in the OB, the ‘Companions’ stopped with vol. V, in 1939, and I never thought I would see the completion of the series : we can  all congratulate the Hillsdale team for its dedication and efficiency. A stupendous achievement !

Now that I have the complete series, I have been able to update the recap which I sent some time ago. See below.

I hope it will be helpful.

With all best wishes,

Hillsdale advise:-

Academic institutions and public libraries can now subscribe to the official biography and document volume eBook series via Bloomsbury Collections. Unfortunately, individuals still cannot access or purchase the document volume eBooks. Hillsdale will be able to sell them as soon as their digital infrastructure is updated or rebuilt so as to support an online store that sells digital products like eBooks. Their IT team are working on a solution.

Dear All

I seem to be having absolutely no luck in trying to discover the fate of Roy Howells, Churchill's nurse and valet from 1958-1965.I am curious that nobody seems to know anything about him.On a recent visit to Chartwell, even the guides showing the public around claimed to have never even heard of him !! Very strange I thought as Howells was an integral part of Churchill's household for several years.I wonder why he seems to have disappeared from history. As he was born in 1928 it is possible that he may still be alive.

Liam..

I used to be a House Steward at Chartwell and did a fair bit of research on Churchill and Chartwell for a Project over about three years. I have to say that the name of Roy Howells never came up during that time .

However a basic Google search reveals that the gentleman concerned actually wrote a book... called ‘Simply Churchill’..

Dear David

Many thanks.

Howells's book is relatively well known to those who have studied Churchill's later life. However apart from a review in Time magazine when it was first published I think I am right in saying that the book has never been the subject of a critical review or indeed the veracity of all its content confirmed. The book did not run to a second edition either here or in the USA the reasons for which are not obvious.
Interestingly the copyright of the book is lodged in the name of Ronald G Howells not "Roy".

Howells was born in Haverford West in 1928 and might possibly still be with us.

It would be fascinating if he were to come forward.

Regards

Liam
