Reported to me today by his son Jeff Forester
John died April 14, 2020 at 90 years of age
He was Born Oct. 1929
I have known John primarily related to bicycling and CABO. Some things I know about him off the cuff:
Author of Effective Cycling now in a 7th edition, former League of American Bicyclists Board member (was he board chair at one time?), instrumental in the formation of CABO, certainly the Father of the concepts and trainings of vehicular cycling, an early outspoken advocate for the rights of people to use bicycles on public roads, etc. etc.

Jeff and I are interested to collect memories and anecdotes of John's life. Send to Jeff at Fores...@comcast.net and please copy me.

A tragic loss. His comments and observations will be missed.

He has earned his rest!

He spoke at an Almaden Cycling Touring Club meeting many years ago. I brought my
twenager son to hear him. My son brought our Effective Cycling with him and John
signed it. My son, now a father, still has the book.

John's contributions to bicycling--as transportation, recreation, sport, a vehicle for fitness, social interaction, and discovery-- far outweigh those of his detractors. John stood for, and rode for, human digity and equality. He advocated respect for law and common sense; he trusted civility over fear mongering; he promoted responibilty of the individual above government overreach.
I'll think of him now whenever I see the sign, Bikes May Use Full Lane. Though for him, of course that went without saying.

Our hearts are broken. John has done more than can be stated to protect the rights of all bicyclists. May this dear, amazing man, rest in peace. ♥️

Very sorry to hear that...I had some very public disagreements, and some very cordial private conversations with him.

I'd always hoped to meet him in person, but now that's not possible...

Here is John Forester  with the other Johns present at the first I Am Traffic meeting in Orlando in February, 2013. This is the meeting that led to the formation of the American Bicycling Education Association (ABEA) and its cycling education program CyclingSavvy.

From left to right, John Brooking, John Schubert, John Allen, John Forester and a younger John whose lasts name escapes me.

I had many interesting and informative interactions with John Forester, almost all of which took place on this forum, and feel privileged to have known him, interacted with him and learned from him.

Like many here and countless others around the world, I was liberated from edge riding by default by John’s writing, making our cycling far more effective. RIP.

Here’s a piece in Forbes by Carlton Reid:

Dear all,

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of John Forester.

John was one of the few geniuses that I have ever met.

He certainly deserves renown as “The Genius of Bicycling”.

John taught me to be an Effective Cycling Instructor.   I will never forget him teaching me his technique for looking over his shoulder for traffic in the rear, without swerving his bicycle.    After watching me try it two or three times but also swerving, he smiled at me and said, “I’m all right, Jack”.

I met John in 1984 at one of the early Pro Bikes.    When John spoke, people listened.    Within seconds, you knew you were hearing from somebody who had pedaled the pedal………and thought about it at length, with an intimidating focus.

John was the man who had the brilliant insight to realize that the bicycle was a vehicle.   And, that its place in traffic required understanding the large traffic principles, using understandings from ancient England and other cultures.   And, he developed a system that is conceptually brilliant, which others have no choice but to acknowledge and use.

Thanks Serge for providing the Forbes article.

Overall, I think the piece provided some good information.

Unfortunately, it erred largely when it said that there was copious proof that separated bikeways are safer than riding competently in the road, even when using bike lanes.    In fact, the credible studies that have been done, Trafitek 2007 and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 2019 show that separated bike lanes increase crashes dramatically, sometimes by a factor of 23 times or more.

I believe the article also erred when it said that John Forester could not explain why cycling was so popular in the Netherlands, with the article author, Carlton Reid, suggesting that it must be due to their network of off-road paths.     Actually, if one knows anything about Dutch cycling, one knows that the Dutch were riding bicycles in majority numbers long before they got their network of off-road paths.    Cycling brought the paths.   It was not the paths that brought cycling.

Dear Bo,

Your question is a little non-specific.    What, specifically, do you want to be taught about?
