Sayings of Gandhiji in Sanskrit

Respected scholars,

Selected sayings of Gandhiji are rendered in Sanskrit by Dr. C D Deshmukh in गान्धीसूक्तिमुक्तावली. The first verse is as follows

उत्कटोऽथ विमलो मनोरथो यो भवेत्स परिपूर्यते सदा ।

शश्वदस्य नियमस्य सत्यतां दृष्टवाननुभवेऽहमात्मनः ॥

I have the book. But I failed to locate a soft-version in archive.org.

I would love to read this book by C.D. Deshmukh.  Besides being a great economist, he was also an excellent Sanskrit poet.  I remember a poem of his "भूरि वन्दे वसन्तम्" published in Pratibha sometime in late 1960s.

Thank you Murtiji and Shankarji for providing this book.

Apart from that, I've always wanted to know what Gandhi means. I just think that his name was often mispronounced as गान्धी instead of गन्धी।

Maybe his ancestors were into selling fragrances, hence the name. Maybe गान्धी also has some meaning in Gujarati. I don't know, just thought of posting this here.

I downloaded from the link provided by Shankara ji. This edition is different from what I have. There is a bonus. Susheela Nayyar ji's "prison days" in Hindi. Unfortunately odd pages are missing. Shankaraji may be able to help.

गुजरात में "गांधी " ही मान्य उच्चारण है, "गान्धी" नहीं  । 
गुजरात में किराना दुकानदार को गांधी कहते है । ( जिसकी दुकान में रसोईघर के विभिन्न मिर्च-मसाला, हिंग आदि गन्धवाली चीजें मिलती है  ।

Dear Vasantmumarji and Shasjiji, thanks for the response.

I'd like to make another assessment here. For example, many words have changed due to English spellings. Some famous personalities who have surname like Basu are pronounced as बासु instead of बसु where it was वसु which became बसु in Bengali.

The name Kunal has become कुनाल instead of कुणाल.

Famous guy Asit Modi being pronounced as आसीत् मोदी instead of असित which means Dark.

So I think it's quite possible in the passage of time, this being mispronounced became a norm or rather I'd say became normal.

But you maybe right. The Gujarati word itself maybe गान्धी.

Yes it is a Gujarati word.  In modern Gujarati, Gāndhī (ગાંધી) means a grocer.   I have read that the word comes from Gāndhika, meaning a seller of perfumes.  The term came to be applied to those who sold not only perfumes but also provisions, i.e., grocers.  Gāndhika became Gāndhia and finally Gāndhī.   Some Gujaratis, especially the Parsis have the tendency to transfer the aspiration on the ‘dh’ to ‘g’ while pronouncing the word, and consequently spell the last name as Ghandi in English.   But when writing in Gujarati, they still write it as Gāndhī (ગાંધી).

Dear Friends,

There is one Sanskrit word or name,namely, शंतनु, which is most of the times and by many educated persons and scholars also, pronounced as शांतनु.

The similar case with proper names like सलिल/ सलील, गिरीश/ गिरिश.

Very few of the persons having this name don't understand the difference between meanings of these two.

Such instances,due to careless pronunciation,could easily be multiplied.

It is interesting to reflect on how a thread that started with the sayings of Gandhiji gets waylaid and ends up discussing how the word " Gandhi" originated!
