Hi all, I'm a new bonsai user and am having difficulty getting the software to recognize my camera, an Allied Vision Manta that is connected via Gigabit Ethernet. Does anyone have any suggestions/solutions?

Cheers,
- Jordan

Hi Jordan,
Currently bonsai does not support allied vision directly, that can change in the future maybe with some help from a bonsai user.
That said bonsai does suport all windows cameras that have direct show drivers. Can you try to figure out if allied vision support directShow?
Bonsai also supports some cameras that have ip stream, maybe that is another possibility here.

Thanks for the quick reply João.

Unfortunately Allied Vision has poor universal hardware drivers for DirectShow...they only offer the driver for firewire cameras.
However, I was able to find a universal SDK with directshow support here: http://www.pleora.com/our-products/ebus-sdk and here: http://www.ab-soft.com/activegige.php

In theory, since these are hardware independent, the drivers should be recognized by Bonsai...correct?

Hi Jordan,

Yes, as long as the universal drivers work with your camera model and provide suitable DirectShow filters, they should be recognized by Bonsai.

Make sure to try both with the CameraCapture and the VideoCaptureDevice modules as they provide different levels of compatibility.

So I installed the universal eBUS driver with direct show filter...when I load in the VideoCaptureDevice into Bonsai, it shows that it has recognized the eBus DirectShow filter in the "properties", but still getting an error when I try double clicking on the source itself (no object found). Any ideas what may be happening?

You mean you can open the DirectShow property pages from Bonsai? Or are you referring to the video Format drop-down where you can pick resolution and FPS.
If these work, then that's weird. Usually if a DirectShow filter is detected on these ones, it will work just fine.

Also you mention that double-clicking on the source crashes with a no-object found exception. Is this while the workflow is running? During execution only the image visualizer should be running and if no image arrives, nothing should happen so I'm curious why you are getting this error. You may have to run the workflow in order to see the property pages working properly.

Feel free to attach a screenshot if you think it may help explain what's going on.

Here's a screen shot which might help things out. The eBus direct show camera is recognized on the right (under "misc -> index") but I keep receiving this error message.

Ah, this seems like another issue actually. It looks like your graphics card driver does not support openGL 4, which is required for the visualizations.

Can you try upgrading your graphics card drivers? Usually that solves the problem. What's the model of the graphics card?

Another way to confirm this is to record a video from the camera without opening the visualizer window. Just add a VideoWriter node after the capture and record a couple seconds of video and stop fhe workflow without opening the window. If it works, it's really a graphics card driver issue...

Tried recording the video as you suggested...video is written but is completely black...so this tells me no images are actually being streamed.
I'm under the impression that this is likely a DirectShow driver problem

Hmmm... did the video have a meaningful resolution set? If so, then images are probably being generated by the capture, but for some reason they are actually black. This may be an issue with camera settings and configuration.

Another way to confirm that images are coming out without the image visualizer is to change the default visualizer to the ObjectTextVisualizer. To do this you can right click on the video node, and choose Visualizer -> Bonsai.Design.ObjectTextVisualizer.

A text box should show displaying the image resolution in case images are indeed produced. If this is the case, you may try opening the DirectShow settings while the video is running (Ctrl+Enter on top of the video capture node) and try changing exposure settings, etc.

In the end we should just integrate the Vimba SDK into Bonsai, but for now I'm just curious how far we can get this way.
