US Ellipsoid Part Number

Hi all,

Does anyone happen to know the part number for the US ellipsoids assembly?

I’m not sure if these are the correct ones since technically I don’t think us versions of the M5 came with them. I think we just got the free form halogens?

I found it very difficult to ID the correct part. Several years ago I swapped my free forms for elipsoids. I purchased a hella set from eBay that I believe came from a 7 series. If I remember, the main difference with the newer (besides being free form) was the adjusters. They were pretty easy to swap out. I wound up selling my free forms on eBay last year.

I’m away right now and will share the p/n when I get back on the 13th. It’s on my eBay docs and unavailable on the phone. If I remember there were several numbers on the hella box, but I’ll report on what I have. They were so easy to swap out; I considered adding HID’s but simply bought high quality Phillips bulbs. They give a better beam throw.

I could not find the details for the when I elipsoids I purchased off of eBay. But I remember I had a hard time figuring out the p/n from the hella box they came in. They did fit in perfect, so I didn’t give it a second thought.

When I sold the headlights from my 93 M5 on eBay, I used the following p/n in the ad description
Left. 63-12-1-379-185
Right. 63-12-1-379-186

I got the above from a BMW Atlanta web site using my vin

Jason, I used the realoem.com for the E34 540i to find all the separate parts for the ellipsoids when I changed mine many years ago:

The Depo lights from Taiwan sold on eBay are pretty good substitutes, but the glass breaks easier.  If you go that route, put impact film such as Lamin-X on right away.  Also, I've found HID lights to work very well in ellipsoid housings.  I have not tried LEDs, yet, I am sceptical of them as H1 replacements.  I think they have too much heat in too small a space, but I haven't tried any.

Is there a particular HID kit that you recommend? I put one in years ago am considering going back to regular bulbs because I drive in the city and because the HID has been unreliable.

I also found HID bulb kits worked well, but I had to try 3 different brands to get one that did not trip the warning light. Modern kits are better.

I just discovered LED headlights two months ago....

put them in a 2001 miata that has projectors; so the LEDs work very well.

From what I hear, there is a great variance between brands and manufacturing techniques.

Even the placement of the circuit board is a factor.

Interesting is that LEDs use less wattage, so no upgrade in wiring necessary.

However they still produce a lot of heat and require heat sinks and fans to pull away heat.

I've been told that quality and life expectancy are also correlated to cost....

So better LEDs will cost more.   Heard some are not "instant on" either.   requiring a little delay.

Amazon seems to list hundreds!

Anyhow, inventive minds have built LEDs to fit our older bulbs.

I am looking for H4 replacements.   

Being brighter, produces more glare.....   seems like projectors are required;

as free form and probably even the Hellas and Cibies with focused cutoff lenses

won't work, without producing unwanted glare...

Free form are very sensitive to the location of the light source.  Ellipsoids are fairly tolerant, at least in my HID conversion.

Mine are more than 10 years old and getting dim.  Either that or my cataracts are getting worse.  I bought mine already installed into the headlights and that particular setup is not available.  I should look on my ballasts for a name.  I would be willing to try LED the next time around.  My H1s have been perfectly reliable and do not trigger the lamp monitor, but they take 15 or more seconds to achieve full brightness, unlike newer models.

OEM who use LEDs have multiple light sources, I believe this is to better manage the heat.  Putting all of them into one H1 like device makes the cooling difficult.  This aspect causes my scepticism.  For city driving, plain old H1 halogen lights should be plenty good.

Looking at available LED conversions, it seems none of them permit the back of the light to be sealed.  Also the covers that are fitted behind the lights need to be trimmed to allow the heat sinks to stick past.

The best solution is a properly engineered aftermarket LED lamp, but fitting them requires fabrication and they are very expensive.
