Private Chat Disabling not Working

Hi,

My bigbluebutton version is 2.2.31 on that lockSettingsDisablePrivateChat value is set to true in /usr/share/bbb-web/WEB-INF/classes/bigbluebutton.properties file.

In the Moderator meeting screen, in the Lock Viewers popup -- shows private chat is locked.

But Still, the users can privately chat with each other.

How can I block this?

Is this a bug in bigbluebutton 2.2.31?

Any reply will be appreciated.

Hi Benson,

most likely this is the "problem" you experience:

Lock settings only apply to users who are being "locked". So for the private chat lock to apply to a user you have to lock the specific user (just click on his name in the user list) and lock him. A small message that he's locked should appear below his name in the list.

By default BBB is configured to have the lockSettingsLockOnJoin parameter enabled in /usr/share/bbb-web/WEB-INF/classes/bigbluebutton.properties, so by default every attendee will be locked when joining until you unlock him again. In this case all the lock settings will automatically apply to all users (also the ones joining later).

Can you doublecheck your configuration if this parameter is set?

Hi Benson,

We've moved to BigBlueButton 2.3 with many enhancements.

Also, 2.2 is on Ubuntu 16.04 which is no longer receiving security updates. You really do want to upgrade. Is it an option for you to upgrade to the latest release and let us know if you still encounter this issue?

Hi Pypo,

I had double-checked. The value of lockSettingsDisablePrivateChat is true in file path: /usr/share/bbb-web/WEB-INF/classes/bigbluebutton.properties.

But In the new version, there is no issue.

I was actually talking about the parameter "lockSettingsLockOnJoin" which makes your users join every session in the "locked" state. Only if this locked state is applied to a user the session locks like locking private or public chat etc. actually apply to them. If a user is locked and chat locks etc. are applied to him can be seen by a "locked" label right below the user's name in the user list.

Can you click on a user in the list and lock him? The lock settings (private chat lock etc.) should apply to him/her then (see screenshot).

And yes, the most recent current release is BBB 2.3.1.

I'm still not sure, if you got right how these lock settings work. To
clarify: If you want users to not being able to use privat chats between
each other you have to set "Send private chat messages" to "locked" AND
AT THE SAME TIME have the locked status set for the specific user you
don't want to private chat (so "locked" is shown directly under the user
name).

Hi Pypo,

I know how to work the lock functionality.

My problem is to lock the private chat for all users in the lock settings popup is not working.

And also "See other viewers in the Users list" option is not working.

My bigbluebutton version is 2.2.31.

Hi Benson,

alright, but again you send a screenshot with users who don't have the
lock settings applied so that's a bit confusing :-)

According to your screenshot the users John and Sam would still be able
to private chat and - even if you set "See other viewers in the Users
list" - they would still be able to see other users in the user list,
because the lock isn't applied to them. This is the expected/wanted
behavior.

If you apply the lock to Sam and John and, in addition to that, the
setting "Send Private chat messages" and John and Sam still can private
chat with each other there probably really is something weird going on,
but I can't help you with that unfortunately, sorry.

Maybe the solution is to move fast to 2.3.1 :-)
