I have a BBB running Debian 9 (Stretch) but still with a very old
kernel - 3.8.13.

What's the easiest/safest way to update the kernel to something more
up to date? Ideally I'd like to be able to do this remotely, I have
ssh access to the BBB. If as a result it all falls in a crumpled
heap it's not really a disaster, I do visit it every few weeks.

If there's no way to do it remotely then instructions for doing it
when I'm on site would be useful too.

I've very little that's kernel dependent running on it, mostly some
Python programs using Adafruit libraries. Anyway if I can get it back
up running with a new kernel I can set about sorting out any problems
due to the kernel change.

Hi Chris,

Back in Port?

If it works for you, why upgrade?

Regards,

Why keep *any* software up to date - to get bug fixes, security
updates, enable new facilities, etc. etc.

In 30 year's of development at dozens of companies no one ever upgrades during the development cycle.

The real cost of software is testing especially for safety critical.

The only people I encountered encouraging upgrading were consultants who wanted overtime 😋

Except over the last year we've tried this twice for you, both times it failed..

Do you have a 2nd board now?

If not, don't upgrade..

I have three BBBs, the one I want to upgrade (if I can) is a 4Gb one,
the other two 'spare' ones are only 2Gb, does this present a problem?
