A question about a good source for web site templates.

I want to make some small static web sites for various stuff and thought
that I could use BBEdit for creating/updating the sites (yes, I know
about tools like RapidWeaver, Hugo, Pelican, etc but they are too
complicated for what I have in mind).

Unfortunately my graphic design skills isn't world famous ... not even
within my family. So I did a search for "free web sites templates" and
ended up with a long list of web sites that offers "free" templates
(mostly WP templates) ... so I ended up looking at Hugo and WordPress
templates.

But before I sit down and try to convert them to be usable with BBEdit I
want to ask if anyone knows of a good source for HTML5 templates that
are not ... let's say, of doubtful quality ... and doesn't depend on
frameworks like bootstrap etc (I want small, self contained static web
sites)?

I was just about to recommend Bootstrap for your "small static web site" because I've made 4 small, static websites with it and I'm planing another two right now :-).

I don't want to derail your original question, only perhaps to hint one more time at Bootstrap… or to learn something new (*) myself :-)

Hi Jan Erik,

Maybe have a look at Bootstrap or Foundation. While they aren’t templates in that sense, I think it’s probably easier to build something quickly that way, instead of messing around with “doubtful quality” templates. Usual disclaimer: It depends what exactly you’re after, especially design-wise.

Other than that, maybe a search on Github will find something.

Hi,

I made a very simple web site using a w3schools template (https://www.w3schools.com/w3css/w3css_templates.asp), which are rather easy to modify. Perhaps you could take a look at them.

I have no experience with other templates mentioned (such as bootstrap), and I would really like to know what your final choice is.

Two observations:

Sometimes these professional templates are so sophisticated that it can be difficult learning anything from them, depending on your starting point.

Also, if you decide to use Bootstrap (which is one of my favorites), I recommend using Bootstrap 3 instead of Bootstrap 4. IMHO, Bootstrap 4 is better for "generated" websites such as you might find with WordPress or one of the Static Site Generators, because the amount of markup needed is way beyond what is needed with Bootstrap 3, even for the same results.

Offhand Question-

Do any of these templates fit an existing personal, website built with 20 year old software repackaged by Adobe into WYSIWYG (dreamweaver 2017 version for OSX) ??

I'm too focussed on other things other than learning internet code at all, but wonder if I could copy paste such templates into dreamweaver2017 in order to "see the design aspect free of the markup"...

My intent would be take advantage of a template look, without learnoing mrkup stuff...

Or does BBEdit provide some kind of streaming-port to a browser to see the effect as templates are used?

Yes and no.

Yes, these templates can be opened in Dreamweaver (for example), modified, and used.

No, these templates are not in the Dreamweaver-specific form where the individual pages are constructed from Template and Library files.

Many of these templates (especially the W3 templates recommended above) have all the code contained on a single page, with the exception of the images, although there can be calls to CDNs for CSS and JavaScript files.

As to using these templates so you don't have to learn markup stuff, that's pretty iffy. You're going to be dealing with the markup to make the changes needed to convert from the generic template to something that you want for your specific purpose, so you will be learning markup -- or generating horrible-looking pages.

BBEdit doesn't have a "streaming-port to a browser," but it does have an "interactive" preview window, and you can view your pages in your browser as well. For a more WYSIWYG experience, you'll have to put up with Dreamweaver or Mobirise or one of the others in that class.

Depending on what you are trying to do, if you really don't want to learn to code a webpage but want to have a webpage, check out TXTI. It's pretty basic but there is just about zero coding involved.
