Hey Guys,

Just got this contact on facebook if anyone is interested.

Hello!

I’m writing from the BBC where we are currently developing a competition format for robotics and engineering. The programme would involve teams of amateurs building robots and devices to complete tasks and challenges.

At the moment we are keen to find out if there are any amature engineers/builders in the UK robotics community – what they might’ve made already and what they’d love to make next.
I was wondering if your group might be interested in discussing some of your current projects, or any projects you've worked on recently? It would be great to hear from any existing groups (students and enthusiasts) as well as hackers and modifiers whose passion for creation dominates their lives.

If you think anyone in your group or yourself might be interested, please ask them to get in touch with me

I look forward to hearing from you!
Alice

If anyone is interested, please let me know and I'll send you her email address (I'm guessing she wouldn't want it plastered in a public forum :))

Sounds good, tho i'd rather not be media spokesperson if we decide to go as a group.

Very interesting proposal. I wonder if these robots could be made to fight in tournaments too...I know a great name for a show like that :P

In all seriousness, I think it would be an amazing direction to go in. Although I have zero experiance building robots I would be keen to get on board and support in any way that I could. After all building robots isn't that complicated is it? :P

I'd be "up for it", as a group activity. Unfortunately I have very little robot building experience either!

Personally I hope it is not like the show Kev is talking about. Those aren't robots. They're not self-directed. And all they do is try to destroy each other.

I hope its more like "The Great Egg Race", if anyone remembers that.

So the questions I'd like to ask Alice are what else can she tell us about the format of the program, what are the goal(s) of these robots, and how much would it disqualify us as a team if we had little or no previously built robots to show?

Indeed full autonomy would be a grand goal. There are many competitions around the world for true robots to complete tasks. Driverless rally cars, maze solving and even athletics and agility type stuff.
As enthusiastic as I would be I do suspect that our lack of knowledge in building and programming these things would be a hindrance.
Not that we should be disheartened about such facts as I think I may be a good idea, BBC show/event or not for us to stick our heads together and try to work out how to make something.

I think we should definatly talk more on Tuesday about this.

I like this idea and I've been doing some stuff on ROVs and state machines.
I think as a group we do have the necessary skills and what we need is an Arduino Mega and some bits.
It'd be good if we could make a walking robot as Paul suggested elsewhere- twist it a bit though and we could make the limbs out of wood?
