Hi all,

I search currently for a solution to replace a single standalone tape drive in a debian server with a tape library with 30+ slots.

Is there a list or experience reports of recommend libraries? I searched already a little bit and found the HPE MSL3040 which would match my requirements.

As far as I understood I have to connect the tape drives built into to library directly to the SAS controller of the server? But how do I connect the library itself to steer the autoloader?

As far as I can see it only have an Ethernet management port, but as bareos uses mtx with SCSI commands I do not understand how this should work.

Thanks!

The tape drives would go into the library and there should be a SAS cable from the library to the computer. This will show up as multiple SCSI devices, one for each drive and one for the controller. It seems that most mainstream libraries work with mtx as the SCSI commands are standard across the industry. The ethernet port is only used for manual configuration outside of bareos. I have a Dell PowerVault library and I use the network port to check on some maintenance status from time to time, but otherwise it's unused.

Ditto, I have a tandberg loader, ethernet is just for library management (total loads, cleaning monitoring etc)

Otherwise it’s one sas connection and my computer sees 2 devices, one for the loader and one for the drive.

Our big TS4500 (1700 slots) at work is the same way, the clients are just connected to the drives and one drive presents and extra device and can even move between drives on a failure. So this really is common on most libraries.

Okay, I was a confused because the library itself has no SAS interface but only these ethernet ports.

If I understand you correctly the library / autoloader and all installed drives will be available through the SAS Interface of any of the installed tape drives?

So, I assume that the drives have also an internal connector to the library on their front panel?

Thanks for clarification.

In my experience the drives go into the library and the library has a SAS interface on it.

Yeah mine has been reversed SAS or FC goes directly to the drive but the drive has it’s own cable to the library and then everything shows up over the SAS connection to the host and the drive.
