Hi everyone,
I'm hoping someone can help me. My great grandfather, Jose Viveiros was born in the Azores but my mother does not know exactly which village. I know he was born in about 1883. I'm looking for his birth certificate. He married my great grandma Guilhermina da Camara supposedly in the United States but I cannot find records to confirm this. I don't know when he came to the U.S. He farmed and was a coal deliverer in U.S. Thanks!

Hi Elaine S,

Everything in the Azores is organized on the town level. You have to know the town your ancestor came from. You only know the Azores and you don't have an island. You have a lot of research to do in the U.S. to try to uncover his island and freguesia (village/town). Here's a 30+ page how-to full of thing to try to find his freguesia.

There is  a process of five pages for Guilhermina, widow and her Children dated Oct 1920.  It may give you the information you seek, unfortunately it is not available on line.  You may order it here, it should only cost a few cents per page plus postage:

Meu bisavô paterno nasceu em Capelas, Ponta Delgada nos Açores em 1840,  tinha muitos ancestrais que eram Viveiros, entre eles Úrsula de Viveiros Natural de Bertanha ou Bretanha casada com Manuel de Souza, que tiveram a filha Teresa em 30-06-1734 e foi batizada em 05-07 na igreja de Nossa Senhora d'Apresentação em Capelas. Bom seria essas freguesias em que viveram seus ancestrais.
