To add to the conversation. The Library of Congress (National Juke Box) has a number of recordings While I have not searched for others my great uncle has several of his recordings in Portuguese posted and can be listened to, he (Manuel J. Carvalho) recorded in the 1920's. http://www.loc.gov/jukebox/

They have so much stuff on it is easy to get carried away on it. There are recording going back to the very early days of recordings. Speeches from Theodore Roosevelt to early jazz, ethnic music, popular music up to the current day, they have it.
