Just checking to see if anyone is still here - and MacOS 28 support?

Hi all - just wondering if there are any plans to support Apple silicon and MacOS 28 (Rosetta retirement)?  FWIIW I can help a little bit but probably cannot drive heavy development if that is required.

Last year, alpha release of Aquamacs 4, based on Emacs 29.4, was announced. 

It is a universal binary, supporting both Apple Silicon (M-series) and Intel CPUs.

So once that is stable the Rosetta retirement will not be a problem.

Yes, Aquamacs will support Apple silicon.

I am pleased to announce the alpha 2 release of Aquamacs 4.

This version is based on Emacs 29.4, a stable release of the main Emacs code. It is a universal binary, with support for both Apple Silicon (M-series) and Intel CPUs.

The first alpha version had more problems than I hoped, including a long run of tricky "just one more thing" problems to be tracked down. Because a release kept seeming imminent, I put off keeping you up-to-date about where things were. I should have been more transparent about where things were, and I'm committing to regular monthly updates after this.

This version has been quite stable, but I'm releasing it as alpha2 before a wider beta release to see if there are some bugs that I and a few testers haven't encountered.

The timing of the beta release will depend on the feedback we get, the amount of work that the bugs require, and the work needed to improve the build system for the external libraries that are compiled in with Aquamacs. The current system depends too much on Homebrew, so the Aquamacs project needs to compile them independently to match the way Aquamacs is configured.

I'm estimating 2-3 months to beta now unless some severe bugs show up.

Also, since this is the aquamacs-devel email list: if you’d like to help with Aquamacs development,
it’s now possible in a way that it hasn’t been for a long time. The update from Aquamacs 3.6 to
Aquamacs 4 involved bringing the Emacs parts of the code base from Emacs 26 to Emacs 29.4,
and it was too messy to do with many contributors.

At this point, most of the known bugs on are on github at
https://github.com/aquamacs-emacs/aquamacs-emacs/issues

and I’ll be adding others that I know about or find out about as we go.

Compiling Aquamacs now requires homebrew for tools and libraries, and
there’s a convenient build script at ./build-aquamacs at the top of the source tree.
(I’d suggest looking it over before running it.)

Now that the Aquamacs 4 base is more or less in place, I’d be delighted to
discuss continued development work, bug fixes, etc. on this list.
