There have been several queries regarding this particular version of this unit working with Avare. We do not have enough knowledge about this unit. If they support GDL90, or can provide their API code, we will be happy to support it.
Maybe they will make a few sales with little work on their side.
If you can forward my request to them and see what they say.

Thanks

Hi Zubair,

Good timing on this question. I called L3 earlier today to ask a few questions about the NGT 9000 product, and that was one of the questions I asked. IIRC, I spoke with Jim. He said they use the GDL 90 capstone protocol. I mentioned to him that I heard there are variances on the implementation of this protocol, and he said their only difference is that they add their product name as an attribute. Does that help? I too am very interested to see if their product will work with Avare. He was not aware of Avare, and it sounds like their testing of products moves at a snail's pace. They are just planning to work on Avidyne testing next month.

There is another post on this forum regarding someone who got a different L3 product working with Avare. I would imagine they are using the same format across their product line, so I am hopeful. I don't want to rest on that assumption though.

Thanks Jeff
So yes it has good chance of working with Avare but I would not bet 7G on it.

I have the L3 NGT 2000 in and out ADSB. Took some time, but it does indeed work on a Samsung tab 3 running Avare. My avionics shop did not get it right the first time. WiFI dongle needs to be configured correctly and transmit on port 4000.

I have had the Lynx NGT-9000 for about a year.
It is incredible.
I can see traffic, access weather, see restricted areas (I live within the Baltimore/Washingon SFRA).

But I'm still fighting to get the Avare app to connect to it.
I'm going to try setting it up to access via port 4000 as soon as I can.

I used the Avare External I/O Plugin.
It showed:

WiFi reading data
Starting WiFi Listener
Success!
Making socket to listen
Listening on port 4000

I flew for 1.5 hours, and the navigation was fantastic.
But I don't have any idea whether it was using the NGT-9000, or internal GPS.
How would I know?

I could not remember how to get the weather on Avare, but the "Tip" just popped-up saying, "Long press on an airport to show its METAR, TAF, COMM and other information".
Crap! I wish I had seen that this morning.   8-)

I'll give it another shot, next time I fly.

Thanks for the update. You will not get GPS position data from the Lynx, and the guy I spoke with said there is no plan for that. You do need to make sure you have selected preferences -> weather -> use ADS-B weather for you to properly determine if you are getting info from Lynx. The question is also if you can see ADSB traffic (and hopefully TIS-B) in Avare.

This morning, I turned on my Samsung tablet, and brought up the WiFi app.
Then, I turned on the ADS-B, while I watched to see if the WiFi on the ADS-B showed up on the tablet.
I didn't see any additional WiFi connections appear.
It is possible that the WiFi is not turned on in my ADS-B, but my avionics tech tells me that it is.

Android does not support ad hoc wifi. Ask tge tech if it is in infrastructure mode.

I'm lost, dude. What do you meant by "ad hoc wifi"?
It works fine on other networks.

And the ADS-B in "infrastructure mode"?
Never heard of that one, either.

The WIFI network that your ADSB receiver is creating must be an infrastructure WIFI, not Adhoc WIFI.

I don't know anything about the LYNX NGT or how it handles WiFi, but I have noted on several occasions that it may be necessary to FORGET some recently used or other strong WiFi signal that your device is receiving before the device will find the ADSB WiFi signal.  I can't tell you how many times I have taken off, thinking my ADSB-IN is working fine only to find I'm getting nothing since it's still CONNECTED to some other WiFi signal.

Dennis

To clarify:  ad hoc mode is essentially client to client wifi communication.  infrastructure mode is client to server.
The ads-b receiver (in infrastructure mode) acts as  the server, advertising an 'SSID' (network identification) to which the client running avare can attach.
The avare software can be configured to connect to any 'port' (this is a network port, not a physical port) on the ads-b receiver 'server'.
The ads-b receiver is configured to listen to a port for connections, and if the port the ads-b is listening to and the port avare is talking to match, then they establish a two-way communication stream, over which the ads-b position data is then sent.

I just got the NGT-9000.  I was able to connect the tablet to the L3 but couldn't figure out how to configure the Avare External I/O application.
Do you change the default number 43211?

Yes. Use port 4000. You'll see that the Lynx sends more info along than what it displays (pireps).

OK - please help the clueless here :-)

Do you change the port on the ADS-B to 4000 or the one on your tablet?  I've got a Samsung tablet and so far haven't found a setting on either the device or AVARE where I can change it.

I'm glad that helped Clyde, but I'm still lost.

Where is the window "where is says  xxxx to the left of Listen"?
Is it in Samsung "Settings" > WiFi ?

Or, are you referring to settings somewhere in Avare?

Hi John,

He was refering to the WIFI page of the Avare External I/O Plugin, which is a separate download from Avare that opens up a number of connectivity options. On the WIFI page, you'll want to specify port 4000 and then the listen checkbox AFTER making a wifi connection to the Lynx.

Sorry John,

I just looked back further in the thread and realized you've already used the I/O Plugin. I guess the confusion is from expecting the literal term in quotes?

Right after I posted the reply, I re-installed the I/O plugin, and made the change.
I had not done that, previously.
By default, it is set to Bluetooth, and I don't think I changed it to WiFi, last time

Now, damn it, I have to wait until next week to try it in the plane!

Thanks, Jeff!

Don't forget to go into Avare preferences, weather, and select use ADS-B weather. It is great that Avare displays traffic and weather.

I continue to struggle with this connection, etc.

I have the Avare External I/O Pluin running.
I have the port set to 4000.
I select Listen, and I get:

Started!
Starting WIFI input
WIFI input: Connected
making socket to listen
--- Output ---

And that's it.There is no indication that it is connect to a specific device.
How can i tell that it is connected, or not, to my Lynx 9000 ADS-B?

In Avare > Weather > I have Use ADSB Weather selected.
I cannot find any other setting related to connecting to the ADS-B

Hi John.
Try to read and follow the information posted about the Stratux, it's very likely that you are missing a step in the procedure, like pairing your tablet with the device prior to starting Avare IO. If you do not get the data streaming in the IO a communication problem is very likely. You should WiFi connect your Tablet / device with Lynx, start Avare first, send to background (Home key), Start Avare IO, and set the WiFi and port 4000 and see data stream, if not you should not go forward, retrace your steps and see what you missed. There may be some setting on the Lynx, maybe some one else here that has the device can help, that you have to set?

You should be able to test traffic, and see if it works without having to fly, on the ground.
If no luck post a screen shot of your IO, Tablet Settings and Avare and Tablet  OS.... TV

I can see whatever I need on the NGT-9000 touch screen, so it's not a big deal.

I'm curious why this isn't working for you John. I've had no issue. It is really nice to see traffic etc overlayed on the sectional. Plus, the great thing is that the NGT-9000 sends more info along than it displays, so I see more unfiltered traffic and pireps.

After I start the engine and flip the avionics master, I open WIFI on the tablet and wait for the Lynx to show up as a device to connect to.
Once I connect to that wifi server, I open the avare I/O module, select wifi from the pull down, and connect to port 4000.
At this point, I open Avare and I get traffic. I can go to preferences and select ADSB weather for that information, which I don't get until I've climbed a bit.

Do you know at which step you are having difficulty?

Separate but related,

With the latest versions of Avare, the preferences section implies that if I've selected ADSB weather but am not receiving ADSB data, I should still see data downloaded from the internet. I don't. It still remains an either/or option. Is this not the case for anyone else?

John,

Not sure if you solved the problem yet, but maybe this will help.

On my system (Android tablet, Avare apps, and Stratux) I have to turn on the stratux first, connect the tablet itself to its WIFI "network", then open the Avare app and IO app.  Without opening Avare, are you able to connect to the Lynx 9000 Wifi?
