Almost a year for me (March). For about the last two months I have been having a burning sensation to the top lateral part of my foot. Anyone else having this problem? Wonder what it could be.

Hi, Usually burning pain is nerve pain. And with extensive surgery comes scar tissue which can sometimes aggravate and even encase a nerve. I would try breaking up scar tissue in the near vicinity and see if that helps. This may take a little time. I had PT work on mine and wow, did it make a difference! It can be brutal tho.

I had a dreadful night last night with a throbbing sensation in the vicinity of the top wound  -which  is now healed but the skin looks pretty thin over the area. I was wondering if this was a nerve pain as there is no evidence of an infection, so hearing other people describe something similar is really reassuring. I will continue with the ice and massage!

I had a triple arthrodesis 7-3-19. I still have pain too. I think it is just nerves, not sure but my doc says it is normal. 1 to 1.5 years before max benefit. Good Luck!

Hello all,  I am now 7 months post ankle fusion.  Pain and swelling on the top of my foot all the time.  Pain in ankle and heel.

First hour or two in bed at night , very uncomfortable and painful.  I have pain and trouble walking when I first get up.  I can't

elevate foot , that too is painful.  Other than that, everything is great, haha !!  Hope we all get feeling better soon.  Sue

I had a triple arthrodesis about 17 months ago. It is a long recovery, but worth it. The burning sensation is nerve pain and scar tissue irritation. Massaging your foot along the incision lines is very helpful. I have been a nurse at Hopkins for 35 years and the first year of recovery was very challenging. Good luck to you all.

Hi Kim, I am almost 12 mo. post triple arthrodesis. I am still having pain and swelling when I am active. Still having soreness on the bottom of my foot. Did your pain diminish the last 5 months. Are you able to walk, exercise, and any sporting activities at 17 months? Did you do any aquatic rehab?

Hi Dennis, I have almost no pain now and can walk with no problem. I’m anxiously waiting for my pool to open-with many restrictions in place, of course, to swim. Honestly doing my exercises in the outdoor pool at our swim club last summer felt better than anything on my foot. Still have some soreness if I have to stand in one place for a long time. Can have a little swelling if I have to sit with my foot down for too long.  Have to make sure get up and walk around at work during the day. If your pain is in the instep, a massage ball is great to use- just roll it back and forth along the underside of your foot. My PT said it helps keep the muscles and tendons stretched out. You can use a golf ball or there are products made just for that purpose.
Take care,
Kim

Hi Kim, thanks for the reply! I hope that I can get where you are at with your foot. I just want to get back to bowling and golfing if possible. Thanks for the tips, I will try them. Good Luck!!

Hi Dennis, no, I am finished with my rehab and am fully walking with no problem. My foot still will get sore if I’m standing on it a long time, or if I have it down from sitting for a lengthy period. My success I think was from staying non weight bearing as instructed, going to PT and doing my exercises religiously 3 times a day. I also had an excellent foot and ankle specialist at Hopkins where I am a nurse. How are you doing?

Hi Kim, thanks for asking how I am doing. I am doing water therapy. It has helped me get in better shape. Helping with my balance and strength. Still having pain and soreness when on my feet for a period of time. Swelling happens too. Cannot bowl or golf yet. I working hard to get better, this might be the way it is for a long time. Thanks for the encouragement!
