Good news, everyone! AnkiDroid is running on ChromeOS!

We've already talked about Google cooperating with a few companies to port Android apps to ChromeOS. See here if you missed it: http://chrome.blogspot.com/2014/09/first-set-of-android-apps-coming-to.html Lucky for us, some clever guy found a way to run arbitrary Android packages on the runtime that is provided by the apps that have already been ported: https://github.com/vladikoff/chromeos-apk I tried this with Ankiand it works!

If you want to test it for yourself, turn on Chromebook and...
1. Download the Duolingo app: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/duolingo/ebnhfamfopiobpaehmebmfjcgkaogihe (assuming you're a language learner, but any of the four Android apps that have been ported will work)
2. Download the following ZIP file from my Dropbox: https://www.dropbox.com/s/sdmeutyle2iv7gy/com.ichi2.anki.android.zip?dl=0 (alternatively, prepare the ZIP file yourself by following the instructions on https://github.com/vladikoff/chromeos-apk)
3. Unzip the file
4. Select `More tools` -> `Extensions` from the menu, click on `Load unpacked extension...` and pick the extracted `com.ichi2.anki.ankidroid` folder
5. Run `com.ichi2.anki` from the new tab page

Keep in mind that this is just a proof of concept, so a few things such as the whiteboard won't work. I have successfully tested the core functionality: syncing, basic reviewing, etc. all work!

Have fun,
Alex

Hi, I am new to chromeOS and am using this to get Anki going on my chromebook. Others might find it useful to know that you need to check the "developer mode" box before you can unpack the extension.

Thanks for making this!

Hello,

we have recently officially released AnkiDroid on the Chrome Web Store:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ankidroid/ckmbkodkbmkmdjdimeiddeljndcneifo
No more need for clever hacks and workarounds! :-)

Thanks for using AnkiDroid on your Chromebook and let us know if you run

Hello,

thanks for your feedback. Could you please give me some more information
on what doesn't work? Is the app not available for download? Does it not
install correctly? Or does the app only show a blank screen? Please let
me know.

Thanks,
Alexander

I'm so sorry I didn't specify the details in my first post - I guess I was a little lazy :P

The .crx install file downloads completely, however after it's complete I get the error message: 'Could not install package: 'FAILED_TO_COPY_EXTENSION_FILE_TO_TEMP_DIRECTORY'.

I figured it would work the old way in the developer mode with the file itself from dropbox, so if it's important I could check if it's going to work the old way.

Hi Kamil,

no problem, thanks for getting back to me! :-)

Am I assuming correctly that you are trying to install AnkiDroid from
the Chrome Web Store? Would you mind trying to install it again now that
version 2.4 has been published?
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ankidroid/ckmbkodkbmkmdjdimeiddeljndcneifo
Running Android apps on Chromebooks is still fairly new and every time
we publish it will pull in a new version of the Android runtime that
might solve a few issues here and there.

Thanks,
Alexander

I´m new to this. The ankidroid on my Samsung Model 2 Chromebook looks great initially.  How can I load an apkg file -- or is it possible? Thanks!
