Hi,

I'm studying Chinese characters with Anki and I have two decks so far. When I add a new card, I add it with type "Basic (and reversed card)". One side will be the character, the other the definition. I would like to practice only in one direction at a time and I would focus on from definition to character practice.

I created a filtered deck for both of the normal decks which only has "card:1" cards. I would add extra cards to the original deck and I would expect them to turn up in the filtered deck, when I do rebuild they show up but then it asks all the cards from the beginning again.

What I want is to have a single deck with both definition>character and character>definition cards, so at any time if I want to practice mixed, I can do that. I also want filtered deck that automatically updates when there is a change in the original deck without affecting the unchanged cards. Also, statistics would be nice to have based on cards instead of deck, or if I press "Again" for a card in the filtered deck it should pop up as needed to practice in both decks and it's my decision which deck I want to practice with and if I learnt the definition it should update in both.

In concept, I don't think it's too difficult, just simply creating lessons for yourself and learning based on the lessons, but it doesn't matter where you learnt a particular definition, you would know it in all other context. Example, if I want to learn fruits like apple, pear, watermelon, etc. I could create a filtered deck with those words, if I had another deck cooking, where I would also have apple, it shouldn't matter where I learn it or make a mistake with it, it should be consistent all around.

Is there a way I can set up Anki to do this?

Thanks,
Norbert

You need to enable Rescheduling for your filtered deck in the deck options, this way studying the filtered deck will update your progress for the cards in the original deck and rebuilding it has the desired effect then. Automatic rebuilding is not possible.

Statistics for individual cards can't be accessed in AnkiDroid for now, but you can view them in Anki Desktop by selecting a card in the browser and clicking "Info".

I have used rescheduling already and it is not what I'm looking for. For example, today I had no reviews due, so pressing rebuild should do nothing because there is nothing to review, but when I pressed rebuild it says that there are hundreds of cards due. I don't want to interfere with the scheduling just because I'm rebuilding a filtered deck. Is there a way to do this?

You'll need to add "is:due" to the filtered deck's search field as well, so that only due cards are included.

Hi Norbert,

I'm wondering if you figured out a way to do this as I have a similar problem and need an automatically updating filtered deck. If so, please let me know.

Kind regards,
Hira

That is not possible as I wrote above, but you can click the "Rebuild" button to refresh it when required.

Hi Hira,

Unfortunately, I couldn't solve this the way I wanted and ended up using the mixed deck all the time. It's a pity that it doesn't work, though.

Regards,
Norbert
