Replaced drives in DNS-323 and now cannot see DNS-323 on network anymore.   Using flashed Alt-F firmware.  I have tried both  DNS-323 as static IP via rooter and DHCP, I get nothing on the network (currently static IP).  The network icon (bottom row center icon) is blinking rapidly and then pulses and then rapidly.  I have place back the old drives to see if that would help- what was I thinking I've flashed the rom, right!

I should be able to see the device on the network at least, right?

I still cannot see it on the network, any help or have I a bricked DNS-323?

I was able to mount the drive using ExT2Fsd and pull the alt-f.log file.  Alt-F is running - I'm posting the log but have replace the MAX address with XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX

You could know that be performing the front-button test, read the About Buttons and Leds wiki

Here is the problem, the 'eth0' network interface is not configured.

Somehow the /etc/network/interface file contents seems to be corrupted, or an incorrect copy has been saved into flash memory.

The easiest route will be to apply a  reset.
Now that you have read the About Leds and Buttons wiki you know how to do that -- keep the back button pressed for more than 20 seconds (count the front leds flashing).
Hope that you have saved settings in you computer disk, as the procedure will erase them all and you will have to reconfigure everything :-(

As you have the disk contents available in a PC, what is the contents of 'Alt-F/etc/network/interfaces'

There is no back button on my DNS-323 A1 - so I held the front power button for 20 seconds, doesn't appear to reset.  Do I need the drives in the device?

in the b1 it is a recessed button, accessible only with a sharp pencil or paper clip

That did the trick, I now see the DNS-323 on the network.  Time to start over - good time anyway as I have two new drives.

I'm having a similar issue, although for me the issue was caused by myself (I think) I've always run ALT-F on 2 DNS-323s with static I.P. s and last night  we got a new internet provider and had to switch from 192.168.0.x to 192.168.1.x(No option to stay as the 192.168.0.1 goes to the satellite equipment.) It was a bit of a pain because I had to set the I.P. of my computer in order to connect etc, so after getting it switched to 192.168.1.201, I logged into the box just fine. Then came the moment where I should have left well enough alone and decided to change it so the DHCP server in the router assigned a reserved I.P. to the DNS-323, and switch the DNS-323 to resolve IP by DHCP. After switching the DNS-323 to DHCP I rebooted it and..... gone, doesn't show up in network, doesn't show in the connected DHCP clients list on the router, and doesn't respond at the old address (or the 192.168.1.240-254 IP range either). I was going to do a reset via the back button, but I wanted to check that I can get the data back after the reset. I had the drives set in RAID 0.

The box changes to DHCP as soon as you hit the Submit button in the Setup->Host page. You don't need to reboot the box; if you do it, you have to save settings before you do it.

The most reliable way of doing the change to DHCP is to do it in the old network, verify that it works, then change the network. Some DHCP servers have a very long lease time, 24 hours, and that might cause issues.

I rebooted it and..... gone, doesn't show up in network, doesn't show in the connected DHCP clients list on the router, and doesn't respond at the old address (or the 192.168.1.240-254 IP range either).

There has been similar reports, and I suspect that to be a corrupted network configuration file.

You can try to boot the box with the network cable disconnected; in this case it will not receive an IP from the DHCP server and it will assign itself the 192.168.1.254 IP; you can then make a direct-cable connection to a computer with a static IP in the same network.

I was going to do a reset via the back button, but I wanted to check that I can get the data back after the reset. I had the drives set in RAID 0.

Clearing settings, either through the back reset button or the webUI means just that: delete the saved settings in flash memory -- that has no effect on the disks. Of course you will loose all your definitions: your users, shares, network settings, hostname, services configuration, etc.

Alt-F uses whatever disks it finds, with whatever disk partition scheme and filesystems, and don't change anything on them!

Thank you very much for your help Joao. I'll give the unplugged from network a try, and failing that I'm not as fearful about hitting the reset.

I'm sorry, I have been examining the code and that will not work, you really have to perform the back-button "reset" (read the about buttons and leds wiki) :-(
