Usually, I don't respond to comments like yours because they are not very thoughtful because they are marginally relevant to my comments. .

 

Know this. It is only a few people that were involved in killing Jesus Christ two thousand years ago but, today, all remember that the Jews (all Jews) killed Jesus Christ even if the plurality of Jews at that time were opposed to killing Jesus as it turned out with the wildfire growth of Christianity in Judea and Palestine shorthy aftter his crucifixion.

If you read one of my earlier postings, I doubted if it is even what our time going after Mister Cruz. But if Nigerians are very angry, then they should demand his resignation now, and later go after him during the next Republican senate primary if he refuses to step down. That's how Carol Moseley-Brown was defeated in the Democratic Senate primary election in Illinois.
 
I'm convinced that Ted Cruz will face senate challenge in his party's next nomination exercise and, given that, his next challenger within the GOP can use some ammunition from Texan Nigerians out to punish him. Afterall, Texas is still home to a lot of respected, prominent Nigerians, who white Texans have tremendous regards for, and I believe you might be one of them --given your probity that you implied in stating what you were doing for a bank that employed you.
 
What people like you in Texas should do, since your voice matters the most, is to define Ted Cruz as a joke and go after him based on that. But you should also be ready to reveal the huge Chinese, Indian, Korean, etc financial crimes against the United States --which dwarf whatever damaging information Ted Cruz might utter about Nigerians. But it should not end at that: just remind Texans in particular, and the world in general that you are aware that ENRON was not ran under by Nigerians, but by Ken Lay (incidentally of Texas) and co.; that Lehman Brothers was not hacked out of existence by Nigerians, but by good old Americans; Ivan Boesky is an American --not  a Nigerian; Michael Milliken --the junk bond king is also very American; Al Capone was a good old American guy; Ma Baker hardly heard of Nigeria, but was American; a lot of US politicians who go to jail for a variety of embezzlement convictions; President Richard Nixon --who embarrassed America with burglary was a household name in the US;
Oliver North who ran the Iran/Contra illegal arms, which involved drugs, received his go-ahead order from none other than Ronald Reagan --and that both Ollie North and Mister Reagan are hardly Nigerians; etc. Then proceed with stating that though all these great crimes and more happened here in US, the vast majority of Americans still constitute the hard working, "moral majority," and should not be condemned with broad strokes. Similarly, tell them that the vast majority of Nigerians anywhere in the world are not different from the American moral majority and deserve their human dignity too.
 
You can also point out that the drug running along Rio Grande, south of the border does not involve Nigerians or even the vast law abiding Mexicans. This point will actually strike a cord among Mexican-Americans, and you can proceed to paint Mister Cruz as a liability in Hispanic-Nigerian/African-American relationship. The GOP --especially Mexican GOP-- will buy into your argument, and the rest of the way might be slippery slope for Mister Cruz, and renewed respect for Nigerians beyond Texas. Additionally, remind Texans that a Washington Post catalog of 10 top nations bribing US executives does not have Nigeria in it (but nations like China, India, Korea, Singapore, etc). That's how you level the playing field, my friend.
 
Evidently, I did not write out of ignorance as you declared. And by the way, if are a lawyer or public relations expert and a client walks into your office with this case against Mister Teddy Cruz, are you still going tell him/her that such bid will constitute opening a can of worms? I doubt it.

Folks:

 

On this issue, while I argue not against those wanting calls made to Senator Ted Cruz’s constituency office to register their disapproval of his swipe at all Nigerians, I also share the views expressed by Stevek. If most of the 419 scams exposed are not associated with unscrupulous Nigerians, he will not have taken his pot-shot at Nigerians. An overwhelming evidence shows most 419 scam letters originate from Nigerians their points of mailing not minding. If a Nigerian hides in South Africa, India, England, France, Germany, USA, name it and sends out scam letters to wherever, he/she is still a Nigerian and it is the name and image of Nigerian that is being tarnished.

 

The righteous indignation being expressed by some of us, Nigerians, is unwarranted. And while you may want to feel righteously indignant, remind those fraudulent Nigerians you know who are involved in credit card and bank frauds, health care overbilling scams, vehicle/car stealing and shipment to Nigeria, life insurance frauds, etc., to remember that in their nefarious dealings to get rich over night, we all Nigerians, pay the price for their greed by having our collective image and reputation soiled. Hence, the Ted Cruzes of the Tea Party are likely to have their political fun at the expense of anyone that is identified as a Nigerian, including our sons and daughters born in the USA some of whom may not have yet visited Nigeria.

 

I believe that is what Stevek meant by, “we have become a nation of liars, obfuscators, prevaricators, fraudsters, and very little honor" because for any and every individual fraudulent and criminal act of Diaspora Nigerians and the widely known official acts of corruption by the Nigerian political and business leaders becomes like a camouflage that reflects on every Nigerian; wherever he/she is resident is of less importance. “The unexamined life is not worth living”, said Socrates and if it takes the Ted Cruzes of the USA Republican/Tea Party to drive it home for us Nigerians, so be it.

 

It is also noteworthy that while Nigerians in their ethnic cocoons can hardly agree on any national issue(s) except their common hate of the Igbo would come out puffing and huffing, swinging and cursing because Ted Cruz called out the ugly skeleton some individual Nigerians have stuffed in our collective closet. In case you do not know it, Ted Cruz said in public what other highly placed American politicians and business leaders would not mind saying but dare not for political correctness. Other than some Nigerians, have you read or heard from any American politician, Democrat or Republican calling him out on what he said? You go figure.

You got it all wrong. The Jews have fought and have practically won the battle with Christians over the crucifixion story. The Jews were collectively vilified for the crucifixion but the Church, Catholic and Protestant, has backed away from the collective guilt. One cannot see it in the catechism as before. If you lack the backbone to denounce evil, it is OK. Not every body has it. But I will not sit down and takea collective guilt that the likes of uninformed Senator Ted Cruz is trying to impose on me and my people.

You also miss the the other point he was making. Obama is an African that is why the unspoken words are to people who say "they are all the same." They are the people Mr. Cruz was speaking to. You may not hear that SteveK.

Individual Nigerians have supported and opposed Mr. Obama and health care. But Mr. Obama got most of his support from Americans, so why not say that American scam artists have been employed to work for Obama Care. This at least would be true. I am not aware of any Nigeria Obama has employed to work for him either in the health care, political arena or anywhere else. Why drag Nigeria into it. He was sending a different message than Mr. SteveK is hearing.

I have always enjoyed reading you, and most times, agreeing with the rationale that underpin your analysis of issues. This is one such rare occassions that I disagree with your analysis. There is always the time for self critical appraisal and there is the time for collective condemnation of any actions designed to cast aspersions on a community such as ours. It is not Cruz to calculate that there will be no collective response and that we will be bugged down pontificating on the merits and demerits of his distateful swipe at us. Cruz should be roundly condemned for his utterances, and the Nigerian communities in his constituency should mobolise and register their discontent at the polls.

Thank you for letting me know you do enjoy reading me and also, “most times, agreeing with the rationale that underpin my analysis”. In this instance that you have disagreed with my analysis, bro, I dearly respect your right to do so. And please, never stop whenever that is the case. But don’t forget that in this case, I argued not against us, Nigerians making callings to Senator Ted Cruz’s office to register our disapproval of what he said. My point is that we, as a people, should also look inwardly and ask each other pertinent questions on the damage the Nigerian email scammers have done to our collective image.

 

It’s not just the email version of the scammers but also, the home-based scammers. You see, scammers have no conscience; anyone, both foreigners and fellow Nigerians are their targets. Have we not continually read in Online Nigerian Newspapers scammers that advertised say, fifteen apartments for rent at N100,000 monthly per unit; more than one hundred interested applicants willing to pay two years in advance will apply only for there not to be available the apartments they have paid for. And before you know it, the would-be land lord or his care-taker have vanished with the millions of Naira collected. Or the land speculator that will sell to more than ten interested buyers one plot of land at exorbitant prices and scram with the monies collected. Those are just two instances of the Nigerian home-based scammers that Ted Cruz may not even be aware of.

 

And please, may you and others in disagreement with my position on this issue have another closer look and analysis of what Ted Cruz said. If I read it correct, here is it:

 

Senator Cruz was reported as saying "You may have noticed that all the Nigerian email scammers have become a lot less active lately… They all have been hired to run the Obamacare website."

 

Now; for me, the operational words in what he said are the “Nigerian email scammers”; he did not say, every Nigerian is an email scammer. And as brother Yinkus Odumakin said earlier today, if in the next 24 hours none of the Nigerian or African internet forums received an email scamming solicitation letter, I will join in making umbrage phone call to Ted Cruz’s constituency office demanding his apology to every one of us, Nigerians.

 

You see, as one granny used to say to mothers with a penchant in defending their errant children in my locality growing up those good old days, that which is evil is just, evil; do not defend evil lest it grows legs and walk. And who knows, its next point of stop could be your residence.

I know you are used to protesting and carrying about placards for any and whatever cause that tickles your interest. So, please, start the lead in this "Shut Down Ted Cruz" campaign”. Who cares? Did I ask you and others that share your position to not protest? I respect your position; the intelligent thing for you to do is also, respect mine and that of the others. Our positions different from yours makes us not less patriotic Nigerians than you.

 

As I said in my follow-up comments on this issue, Ted Cruz did not say, every Nigerian is an internet email scammer. He has in mind a particular group and called them out, “the Nigerian email scammers”. You see, that I am against his anti-Obama stand and lead in shutting down the USA government will not blind me to the extant damages the Nigerian internet email scammers have done to our collective image as individual Nigerians and collectively. Hence, I believe his reference to it should give us something to ruminate over.

 

Bolaji Aluko, it is your God given right to express your disagreement with me or anyone else. But when you descended into rant like, “curmudgeons Steve Kueberuwa,  or two-side-mouth-talkers like Ken Asagwara”; you showed yourself as the little antagonistic man that you are. I write once again in support of this "Shut Down Ted Cruz" campaign being led by some Nigerians in the Diaspora.

 

I have learnt in activism that:

 

   - you cannot get all people to support your particular passion about a particular issue;

  - others too will have a passion that you may not have a passion for

  - you should not allow the lack of passion of others to deter your own.

 

So in this particular Cruz/Nigerians palaver:

 

  - those who wish to write and "shut-down" Cruz should come together and do so. [I remember during the Carol Moseley-Braun situation, there were many calls that "she is a Black woman...she is the only Black Woman in the Senate...why do we want to bring her down...." Blah, blah, blah...  But we pressed on, and won.....]

 

 - those like Osita Ebiem below who (for whatever reason) - or curmudgeons Steve Kueberuwa,  or two-side-mouth-talkers like Ken Asagwara, etcheram ad nauseium - want to write to Cruz to praise him for his dissing NIgerians in should go on.

 

No matter Cruz's popularity in Texas, I can assure you that we will make him SERIOUSLY uncomfortable if we keep at it,  since we will have MANY people come on our side for their own many various reasons.  My own reasons are Cruz's dissing Nigerians, his anti-Obama-ness, and his "shutting down" the country, not necessarily in that order! :-)

I wish to express my support at this time of unwarranted attack on you for a statement you made in regards with some Nigerians. You are clearly right and should not back down and let lies and recklessness win over truth and the justification for objective criticisms. The statement credited to you was specific and directed at the Nigerian internet scammers and not a blanket statement as the misguided Nigerian critics are trying to make it sound. Unfortunately this is exactly what is wrong with Nigeria - most Nigerians live in lies and denial of realities. They jump on issues without taking time to understand the truth of the matter and invariably deflect the discussion to everything else except to those things that are connected with the issue. Interestingly, those that complain the most are those ones that know little or nothing about their so-called country. One of the so-called groups that are leading in the attack have come up with some figures of their so-called Nigerian PhDs. These Nigerians possess so many Phds and yet they are unable to read the right meaning to a very simple statement, isn't it something? They also have so many doctorate degrees and yet cannot fix anything, not even the smallest light bulb in their country. With all the college degrees they claim to possess but they have not the slightest sense of history about their Nigeria. Biafra happened forty six years ago and many of these merchants in senseless calumny cannot relate any comprehensible and articulated statement about it. To silence these protests, please Senator, challenge them to a debate about Biafra and why the division of that country is the answer to all the problems. Thanks for being realistic and truthful.

You are clearly right and should not back down and let lies and recklessness win over truth and the justification for objective criticisms. The statement credited to you was specific and directed at the Nigerian internet scammers and not a blanket statement as the misguided Nigerian critics are trying to make it sound. We have the voting rights as citizens and we have the economic power to help defeat him in the next election cycle. We should also flood his office with calls to register our protest. Kunle, please let's remember that, in his own words, he "was born a Nigerian but since ceased from being one." Since this matter does not concern and should not involve non-Nigerians, I would not waste the time I don't to reflect on a bystander's counter-view. Anybody reading, including Senator Cruz would know that the writer is not a stakeholder in Nigerian affairs. In his words, he had long left and ceased to be a Nigerian.

For all Nigerians, please let's keep holding Ted Cruz's feet to the fire! There is no room for distraction here. Since yesterday, I have been counting and the number is growing.

Thank you my brother, John Ebohon! It is well said and it shall be well with you! Not everybody will see the unsaid things in the heart of Ted Cruz about Nigeria. Not everybody saw the unsaid things behind the explosive 47 percenters of Mitt Romney. It was not by mistake that Ted Cruz spat out Nigeria in his sarcastic comments. I am sure that he had some other things in minds.

Okay, in the first few weeks of arriving this country many years ago, I received a fat envelope that nearly gave me a heart attack. This envelope was announcing that I had won $1,000,000! That night, I didn't sleep as I was planning and plotting how I would use this money. Naira - Dollar exchange rate was 4 to 1. My dream burst when I shared the supposedly 'good news' with an Igbo friend who had lived here longer. His prolonged hysterical laughter even made my case worse. When he finally asked me to thrash the envelope, I thought that he was merely being jealous of my huge fortune. The rest of the story is history. Now, the question can be asked: who sent me the package? I found out that it was sent by an established American company, and not Nigerian 419ers. In fact, Nigerian 419 had not germinated by then! Biko hapuchanu! But that is not the issue here. Ted Cruz has insulted me, my ancestors, and my posterity by this sarcastic statement. Simple!

I believe that your argument that Senator Ted cruz Jnr. merely identified a spefic group of Nigerians
and 'called them out" is not only flawed but it also does not meet the test of probity.

If Senator Cruz had merely asserted what we already know--which is  that some Nigerians (a few at most) engage in
fraudulent activities including engaging in e mail scams, he might be forgiven as he would have merely 
reaffirmed a known truth.

Unfortunately, Senator Cruz went further. He laid the blame and the burden for all the problems plaguing the online registration
process for ObamaCare squarely on the shoulders of these Nigerian e mail scammers who may or may not have ever worked
on this program.

 In essence Senator Cruz has not only accused a group of Nigerians of being fraud artists--he has also labeled
Nigerians in the programming and IT field of being so incompetent that their hiring by the Obama administration had brought down
that a major US social services program he opposes.

Notwithstanding that some of our compatriots engage in criminal behavior, one counterbalancing positive trait Nigerians
have in the USA, Canada and the rest of the world is our sense of duty, attention to detail at work and our uncommon brilliance--
which is due to our positive attitude towards educational attainment and work. It is this attitude that has catapaulted Nigerians in the USA
to a position in which they are recognized (according to the most recent census figures) as being the most highly educated identifiable group
 amongst all Americans ---including native born and immigrants alike and all races.
Native Indian, White, Asian, Hispanic and African-Americans.

Since some Nigerians like yourself are now telling us that we should keep quiet because Senator Cruz's statement is not a big deal--
considering he merely asserted the truth, I would like you to examine the full ramifications of Senator Cruz's statement vis a viz the
potential harm to the professional integrity of Nigerians.

You should also consider  the possibility that there might in fact be  be a few or many Nigerian IT professionals  who are actually working
on the implementation of ObamaCare or might be doing so through secondment from private consulting forms. Should these group of
Nigerian IT professional now bear the burden for the glitches, both major and minor in the implementation process because as alleged by
Senator Ted Cruz, they are not only fraudulent but also incompetent.

Please think this through!

Good luck to all of you hyping on trendy Ted to bow before you.
Do believe your voice or even votes would matter in his re-election efforts?
Watch it. Ted will "cruz" back to his seat whether you vote for him or not  or we take this protest to his parents or Obama.

The most we can take out of his insult is to acknowledge his  recognizing that Nigerians in the  USA are a force in a thing and many other things Ted will heartly ignor.

Skills and knowledge are essential for life and our use of such skills to create goodness is rarly praised and the few evils  that are done with such skills takes center stage as in this case. Ted is not different by principle from the scammers he cajoled.
The scammers use their skills to dupe and cause harm to may be a few. Ted uses his skills and knowledge to dismantle Obama care, an act that can be very devastating to a great many if he succeeds.

at one point in the history of the US, Asians were insulted and badly treated. today they are being depicted as 'model immigrants'. what it means it that identity is not a permanent construct. it keeps changing as it is defined and redefined. people like cruz will continue to exist but as Nigerians and Africans mature and grow in the usa, a day will come when it will be more of praises than cruzes.

You are no doubt aware of the reaction of Nigerians and friends of Nigeria to a statement credited to your good self on the above.

Our immediate reaction at the Embassy is to assume that you were wrongly quoted and that the statement would be denied. We are however surprised that this has not happened. We have no choice than to assume that the statement was deliberately made by you.

For a start we are shocked that a high profile Senator of a country which is at the forefront in building a peaceful and stable world in which nations and peoples treat each other with mutual respect could be engaged in an act which offends the sensitivities of an important component of his constituency.

Distinguished Senator I am sure you are sufficiently familiar with the constructive contributions which Nigerians have made to economic, social and political lives of Texas especially in the Houston area. Every country has its own share of law breakers. To use the activities of  few as an opportunity to cast aspersions on the integrity of a country and its people is not only unfair but also excessively offensive. You yourself made the point that the so-called email scammers have disappeared from the scene. But it is not because they were recruited to work on Obamacare. It is because of the successful efforts of our government working through the Embassy and the international law enforcing agents to curb the activities of these few law breakers.

It is not the practice of any Nigerian diplomatic mission to interfere in the domestic affairs of our host countries. But we will not sit back, fold our arms while a politician assaults the integrity of our country and people in the process of appeasing the base instincts of a few misguided elements in his constituency. Distinguished Senator the least we can say is that Nigerians feel offended by you. They demand an apology.

Please know this. Before I made my comments regarding this issue, I thought about the man, Senator Ted Cruz and his comments in simultaneous manner. This is what I mean. Senator Ted Cruz, the Republican Party/Tea Party rightwing demagogue extremist, I detest for his visceral racist dislike for President Obama; his odious stand against The Affordable Health Care Act aka Obama Care steaming from his dislike for President Obama. And his unconscionable insistence on shutting down the US government to score cheap political points not minding the collateral economic cost of $24 billion dollars. In the entire gamut of the USA politics, he is not a friend of the African-American. For that, if it were within my call alone, he will cease being a Senator of the US Senate. That for me, is Ted Cruz, the man. Like I said, I detest him.

 

Now; about his comments regarding the “Nigerian email scammers”, I still stand by my earlier position which was that, any Nigerian that wishes to protest what he said should go ahead and do so. I don’t intend to do so because, he did not generalize that all Nigerians are email scammers. If there is any of you, my readers that say otherwise, please, show me where and how, what he said about “Nigerian email scammers” means a generalization of all Nigerians. And if you say, why should he single out “Nigerian email scammers” when fraudsters are found in every land and clime? I will say, yours is the two wrongs make a right fallacy argument. For me personally, I have had professional and social colleagues tease me about the ruination of Nigeria’s name and image by the Nigerian 419ners, credit card and bank fraud, Nigeria’s oil bunkering, etc. Though often, one may be made to feel, such teasing is in the lighter mood. But any discerning  mind knows, it connotes a lot more than what is apparent.

 

Do you know something else that has surfaced here because of Ted Cruz? Over the years that I have been in the Nigerian internet forums, I do not recall any dedicated discussions by Nigerians in open condemnations of the email scammers and the damage they do to Nigeria’s image. If anything, I have heard and read some of us Nigerians, grinning how “smart Nigerians” outsmart greedy whites/foreigners that fall for their scams. For me, that says a lot. If Ted Cruz calling out “Nigeria’s email scammers” begins concerned Nigerians discussing openly this ogre and its associated stigma that rubs off on every Nigerian, why not? Let the discussions continue after our petition is sent to Ted Cruz.

Introduction

I wish to give to readers here some benefit of my interventions on 419 on another Nigerian forum. So I am repackaging some of the information to suit the present forum. If the presentation is not linear, it is because I have not fully linearized the original submissions, which were often responses to other interventions that I have omitted here.

Nigerian Perceptions of 419

I continue to hope that many more of my Nigerian compatriots will see reason about this "419" business, that its EFFECT on Nigerian international commerce is ASYMMETRIC with respect to the US and other foreign nations, and that we NIGERIANS should not be spending so much time propounding "Gotcha" theories of Anti-Colonialism and racism.

Some of the people being scammed too are Nigerian-Americans, so those Nigerian-Americans too have a right to object to "Americans" being scammed. We should not always have at the back of our minds that the only Americans are White, blue-eyed foreigners, or even who we call "Afro-Americans."! :-)

Why am I so passionate against 419? Quite frankly, I am TIRED of the psychological trauma one faces when you want to do business involving Nigeria from here, and you have to hem and haw and show that "YOU ARE CLEAN o, just in case you think I want to 419 you!" - and you pull all kinds of rank.

Or you say that you wish to do business in "West Africa" - only to reveal that Nigeria is "well, just one of those countries..." when in fact it is out of concern that naming Nigeria might put your potential partners off!

Another quick background

I lived in the UK for 18 months between 1977 and 1978. I have lived in this USA CONTINUOUSLY from December 1978 till today, and have been a dual citizen of the US and Nigeria for six years now. In the US, I have lived in California, New York, Maryland/DC, Washington State for various lengths of time. So I know a little of what I speak about changed Western (i.e. British, American) attitudes to Africans, and to Nigerians in particular.

Before the early-to-mid 1990s, this Nigerian FELT absolutely NO QUEASINESS about telling ANYBODY that I am a Nigerian. That is, I did not expect a retort like "Oh, I read that you were ranked the most corrupt country....Oh, I heard a lot of people were killed there yesterday.....Oh, I hear that the guy who won your presidential election, the guy who was in prison? A-B-I-O-L-A? I hear he died in prison!......Oh Abacha, he died too!.Oh, I just got a letter yesterday; my Nigerian friend says it is called 419......Oh...Oh, I just signed a letter to make sure that some girl is not stoned to death for fornication by some Muslim fundamentalists in your country....I hear that you cut off hands in Nigeria!" etc., etc.

What I used to hear was "Man, you guys are smart in class! If you see the guy in my class, he answers all the questions, and we all wanted to be in his study group! I can see that you are smart too, like all of those other..... Man, your country is filthy rich, a lot of oil! I am sure that you have a lot of money in your pocket.......Are you Igbo Biafra or Yoruba?.......You have a good soccer team! Man, I like Kanu Nwankwo and Jay-Jay!...."

And so on. Now, because of all the bad things they hear about Nigeria, they wonder whether that "smart guy in class" is not cheating his way - like they cheat back in your country? They wonder what is the point of being oil-rich if so many people die in Jesse trying to scoop up oil from a deliberately broken pipe......and wonder about a country that has so much talent like Kanu and Jay-Jay, but never quite seem to achieve in the league that it should.

If those things DON'T bother us, I wonder what does. If they don't bother us, then we will have NO PASSION to change them around, no matter whether it is some White, Blue or Green racist rubbing it in. A number of Nigerians have probably not lived in the West long enough to see Nigeria and Nigerians move from a position of respectability to one of complete disrespect, particularly in the business community, because of our 419 reputation, then they cannot fathom what I am talking about. All they have learnt is the latter situation - and it rightly grates on their patriotic sensibilities, and they charge "racism."

Since when? Why were Nigerians not such objects of racism back in the 1970s and early 80s?

I plead to Prof and patriotic Nigerians to just ignore their porous excuses. Do not allow them to distract our focus,

'President' Ted Cruz will remember them as foreign Affair Secretary or Advisers on Africa Affairs.

My People,

First thing first, sign the petition. This is the very least you, yes you can do whether you like or dislike what Canadian wannabe US citizen Senator Cruz said. 

Second, please call his office, please be respectful and polite and keep your point simple. For example, when you call tell whoever answers the call that - you are aware of or read or heard of Cruz's comment, you strongly disagree with the good Senator because he is wrong and misinformed. Tell them you just wanted him to know that and again respectively hang up.

Third, this is an opportunity for Nigerians anywhere who have the resources to demand an audience with Senator Cruz and talk some sense into him - one on one - and put fear in him that Nigerians are no longer living in the 20th century but are prepared to compete and are competing in the 21st century.

you have spoken well but you seem to miss the point. The point is that the Senator is, indeed, correct in his characterization of Nigerians. Why do we deny the obvious. What do psychologists tell us, first admit your fault then fix it. Fellow Nigerians:   Why are we calling Ted Cruz's office and why are we signing a petition rather than filing a complaint?  These exercises constitute negative value to our collective interest. Calling Ted Cruz's office will show how weak and disorganized we are. We will be like barbarians talking in thousands. He will use our weakness to his advantage. Likewise, a petition will show a sign of being uninformed and uneducated about proper steps in addressing the issue.   Friends, I mean no disrespect in highlighting our mistakes on this issue, but this is not the time or place to be disorganized or be individualistic. We need to call a meeting, organize and determine best approach and select representatives who can best capitalize on the situation for the benefit of beginning to cleanse the current world wide spread of of the Nigerian infamy. The letter written by the Nigeria ambassador to the US should be enough to motivate us to come together to discuss this issue.   We do not need to care if Ted Cruz apologize or not, rather seek to seize the opportunity of the fact that he made a false statement that is damaging to a whole nation of more than 160 million people and he is a representative of Texas State. This is the big deal, and it is as big as we choose to make it. The US ambassador to Nigeria should be made aware of the situation.   My organization, AV, will be willing to facilitate a virtual conference meeting for all the Nigerian groups nigh and far. This is a sincere offer. Otherwise go with other means available to you. We need administrators of all the Nigeria listserv on Yahoo and Google Groups, LInked-in and Hotmail to reach out to their constituents and work together in facilitating the discussion. Invite NIDO, NLA, and the Nigerian ambassadors to discuss and understand the gravity of the situation, and make a decision on what to do. I think this is a good way forward. With an approach like this we will not lose, and Ted Cruz or any other loose     We must pls speak with one voice. The only way to achieve that is to come together and decide together. If nothing else let this be an opportunity to come and discuss together at one time regardless of your time zones, location or your position on the issue. Libel involves the making of defamatory statements in a printed or fixed medium, such as a magazine or newspaper. All of which Ted seems to have violated with his public statement.   Why not look into it or make a public statement about it. You will get support from Washington and perhaps others around the world. It will certainly provide a distraction to the Tea Party's momentum and provide Nigeria an opportunity to re-brand itself. Do you think Cruz could get any work done if millions of Nigerians keep calling his Texas and DC Offices? Saturate his email? He will have to call Homeland Security for help. So please do not tell us not to call his office. Flood his communications system so that he does not get any work done.

Nigerians should also identify Texas Corporations doing business in Nigeria and phone them both in Nigeria and in Texas and the C suites will call Cruz and he will be on his belly begging.

Do you really believe that you can win a court case based on what Ted Cruz said? Did he really defame Nigerian email scammers? Assuming he made a blanket statement about Nigerians, which he didn't, will it be totally inappropriate? My brother everything is a scam of some sort in our country Nigeria. From the petrol attendant, to the market woman who uses a false cigarette cup or mudu to measure garri or rice to the mechanic who takes your money for a new spare part and still uses the old part, to works engineers who issue false job completion certificates, to doctors who collude with patients to defraud their clients, to great men of God who organise fake miracles, to our politicians who defraud the national treasury, to professional scam artists etc. I can go on and on. The truth is that everything is a scam in our country, unless you choose to live in denial. Sue Ted Cruz, all his defence team needs is a month's supply of Nigerian newspapers to get himself off the hook, with a net effect of damaging the country's image the more. The Nigerian scam is very pervasive in our society. Rather than waste efforts on Ted Cruz, we should be talking about how to stop the pervasive scam that has virtually brought our country to its knees. The difference between us and most civilised countries is in the degree of pervasiveness and the fact that scam artist don't get away with their scam. In this same forum many educated Nigerians are justifying the Stellagate scam and you think the world will take us seriously? The month you start your court proceedings, Ted Cruz's defence team will have enough current scam news to make minced meat out of your litigation. Even this your call to mobilise all Nigerians against Ted Cruz will end up in a scam. Please let's use our energies wisely.

You are wrong here. I spoke with the Senator's office and his aide said the Senator did not call ALL Nigerians scammers - ONLY the ones that work for Obamacare. So you cannot join the bandwagon of calling all of us scammers.

I read from Marshall that there are two Nigerians he knows that were working for a company (ies) involved with the project. I see a golden opportunity here for those Nigerians working on Obamacare to clean up in a law suit (if they were never Internet 419ers). They should sue the Senator to prove that they were ever involved in 419 activities and if the Senator cannot prove it, not only their names and reputation but their family names have been falsely scandalized. I would accept no apology in this case, only $$$$, This should deflate the Senator's war chest for his next election.

That is the kind of statement that comes from a self-hating subconscious. To know in yourself that you don't fit a mold, and yet presume yourself to be, is the worst kind of self-hating. Unless of course, the statement is made by someone who is not a member of the group he thus vilifies (just like the ignorant and malicious senator - who, by the way, is not even anglo-saxon).

Also, knowing the history of stereotyping and what that has been used for, these types of statements are egregiously malicious.

That assumption is also the most unscientific. It is called ecological fallacy of the worst kind. The one in which you paint the majority in the color of the minority. That is called incompetence. Also, to knowingly characterize a whole population with a fringe minority feature and use that in decision making is part of the mind-set that has produced the results we have in Nigeria. 

The black man has fallen completely to the lure of miseducation and antispirit religion, changing his self-definition to that determined by others.  However, before the day comes night and the cycle goes on. 

Afrikans will eventually understand that the definition of freedom is the ability and reality of creating a space for yourself in existence, that fits your image of yourself (however you define that), and allows you to exist in a state of comfortable equilibrium with your environment.

And Afrikans will eventually realize, that darkness has no physicality. In other words, darkness does not exist. It is only an absence of light, not a presence of anything (an illusion). 

But light requires energy, and darkness (which is nothing of itself) requires nothing. Light thus requires effort and darkness nothing still. 

Our efforts must be directed more at building our own freedom (turning on our own light), and less at convincing darkness (nothingness) to stop oppressing us.

Dear Yaya, it is Africa Views. Not African View. Please note the plural. This means many view points.  No one should get to speak  arbitrarily for the lots.  The least we can do is to act in a due democratic process.  That's all. Apparently that is a challenge to many people.   I am not Italian, and last time I checked you weren't either.  I am also not a 419ner. But why contradict ourselves with perfidy. On one hand you preach "African independence" or for lack of any other intelligible connotation -- US of Africa, as you would have it be; while on the other hand, you are saying a concerted action against a cultural insult on Nigerians is only good if Italians would react similarly for being called Mafia.  The fact of the matter is that they would. But this is not the point.   I care about African people at home and in Diaspora. I care even about you, although I wish I could challenge you to a live debate on relevant issues. And needless to say that Nigeria is an important country to African people, because it has the highest population and highest diversity of African people in the world. So, if someone insults Nigerians, it is destabilizing the core center of African foundation. But Nigerians are not aware of their own value  and self worth and it appears that they are adamantly resistant against anything that tends to challenges them about self worth or responsibility to the stabilization of the core foundation of African values. This does not make Nigeria the microcosm of the entire African society, just a very important and central part. Because many argue that quality, not quantity should determine representation our our values. So not acting up to expectation on issues such as this is a failure on leadership and makes other African nationals angry.   Anyway, there is no need to cry over spilled wine. I am sure Ted Cruz's public apology  will even win himself some Nigerian  friends who will come out to argue the rationale of his assault on them. While I support independent mindedness and dissent, they are only good if they are not obstacle to the growth of the whole society. This makes the whole process a scientific study for us. The least we can get out of this would be an understanding of why things are the way are in our society, and that in itself would have been some growth attainment.   Goodluck and congratulations on obtaining an  apology from Ted Cruz.  We should throw a big party and distribute awards. At least, that way we will be doing something that we are very good at.   I know many of the Nigerians, want to get this behind them very quickly so that they can continue their assault on each other's ethnicity, cultural icons and loyalty to nationhood. You are not an American if you do not understand democracy. I mean, the kind that the rest of the world practices and not our Nigerian bran, where the elected officials are beholden only to the president, the party, and god-fathers and never the people that are supposed to have elected them.

 

American democracy is beholden only to the people that elected the official. And the people elected that particular person to represent them because of his campaign promises that told the people that he/she is the closest thing to their beliefs and wishes.

 

Ted Cruze was elected by his district in Texas to oppose Obamacare and the president's policies, not to look out for the global economy or even the US economy. Leastwise, not how Nigerians feel about the tools he chooses to fulfill his promise to the people that elected him. And that, exactly, is what he tried to do and continue to try to do. And by the next election, if he was wrong about the wishes of the people, he will be replaced by the people. If no, he will be re-elected. Anything else, including a petition originated from Otuoke, Nigeria, is whistling Dixie!

 

That's how real democracy works. That's why America works and Nigeria is singing SNC.

 

Until you understand this, you are not a Nigerian-American; just a Nigerian.

Sir, If you think that senator Ted Cruze, who could care less about the president of his own country and the leaders of his party, gives a rat's ass about some petition written by a Bolaji Aluko from Otuoke village in Nigeria and an Ola Kassim from Canada, then you are part of Nigeria's problem of lack of clear thinking. His staff, simply, responded to the ambassador in Washington because that us what protocol calls for.

Thou has spoken, Rotimi! We should just accept his apology, half-baked or not! He's been respectful enough as far as I'm concerned. The Aluko/Kassim leadership made the strong point; Ted got it; and to me it's good enough! As a fellow Republican, I also advised he considers an unreserved apology and the gentleman humbled himself to admit his error in judgment contrary to tthe Embassy's expectation of a denial - the Nigerian Way, which would have deepened and further complicate the problem! Please let's focus on the home issues! We've so much at stake here than focus on Ted! I have seen the number of “Nigerian organizations fighting the scam” as provided by you. Going by the date you stated as marking the beginning of your fight against corruption in Nigeria and the Nigerian email scammers (17 years and counting), nothing seem to be changing in regards to abetting the situation, if anything it got worse. Do you see how unserious your works have proved so far? It is one thing to present academic arguments in your fight but practical approaches and personal exemplary livings rather than theoretical constructs will get you better results. It is very insufficient to write pages of papers attacking an issue while remaining an enabler of sorts to those one is ostensibly fighting against.

My question to you is. How many corrupt Nigerians, especially, those in high places as in government that you associate with have you drawn their attention to their official acts of corruption? First of, I was never a fan of Cuban-Canadian US Sen. Ted Cruz, even before the 419-gate; he who somehow rose to become a US senator, primarily by hating everybody. So hating on Nigerians [no matter that we invited this on ourselves (see Ibori, Oduah, etc., not only the retail kind of 419)] - is not new.

That said, I agree with you; the half-hearted apology was all Nigerians could hope for, and honestly I was surprised there was even one. Why? Because it's not Nigerians constitute any tangible voting number anyway.

As much as I salute your very high OBJECTIVITY in analyzing issues, your points below are noted but let us also bear in mind that Ted Cruz Constituency - THE AMERICANS are not saints either. After all, who taught NIGERIANS SCAMMING, is it not US and UK and the developed world and they are still on top of it may be in ADVANCED FORM than Nigerians are doing.

So we need to be careful in calling names here are - NIGERIANS ARE SCAMMERS, AND AMERICANS ARE ALSO SCAMMERS and by so it will not be proper for one side to be crucifying the other in the public for a sin that is committed on both sides regardless of the magnitude of the committing.

The difference between us and most civilised countries is in the degree of pervasiveness and the fact that scam artist don't get away with their scam. In this same forum many educated Nigerians are justifying the Stellagate scam and you think the world will take us seriously? The month you start your court proceedings, Ted Cruz's defence team will have enough current scam news to make minced meat out of your litigation. Even this your call to mobilise all Nigerians against Ted Cruz will end up in a scam. Please let's use our energies wisely.

Folks:   On this issue, while I argue not against those wanting calls made to Senator Ted Cruz’s constituency office to register their disapproval of his swipe at all Nigerians, I also share the views expressed by Stevek. If most of the 419 scams exposed are not associated with unscrupulous Nigerians, he will not have taken his pot-shot at Nigerians. An overwhelming evidence shows most 419 scam letters originate from Nigerians their points of mailing not minding. If a Nigerian hides in South Africa, India, England, France, Germany, USA, name it and sends out scam letters to wherever, he/she is still a Nigerian and it is the name and image of Nigerian that is being tarnished.   The righteous indignation being expressed by some of us, Nigerians, is unwarranted. And while you may want to feel righteously indignant, remind those fraudulent Nigerians you know who are involved in credit card and bank frauds, health care overbilling scams, vehicle/car stealing and shipment to Nigeria, life insurance frauds, etc., to remember that in their nefarious dealings to get rich over night, we all Nigerians, pay the price for their greed by having our collective image and reputation soiled. You got it all wrong. The Jews have fought and have practically won the battle with Christians over the crucifixion story. The Jews were collectively vilified for the crucifixion but the Church, Catholic and Protestant, has backed away from the collective guilt. One cannot see it in the catechism as before. If you lack the backbone to denounce evil, it is OK. Not every body has it. But I will not sit down and takea collective guilt that the likes of uninformed Senator Ted Cruz is trying to impose on me and my people. You also miss the the other point he was making. Obama is an African that is why the unspoken words are to people who say "they are all the same." They are the people Mr. Cruz was speaking to. You may not hear that SteveK. Individual Nigerians have supported and opposed Mr. Obama and health care. But Mr. Obama got most of his support from Americans, so why not say that American scam artists have been employed to work for Obama Care. This at least would be true. I am not aware of any Nigeria Obama has employed to work for him either in the health care, political arena or anywhere else. Why drag Nigeria into it. I agree with you my Honorable Rotimi Osunsan. I personally called his DC office just like many Nigerians to protest  and damage for an apology to the hard working Nigerians. He was honorable enough to apologise to the hard-working Nigerians who felt offended. The Nigerians doing the scams should stop their "get rich quick" attitudes
