Outgoing Governor  Oshiomhole had no business giving a 'staff of office' to the Oba Ewuare II after he had already been crowned by tradition - by the King makers.

Vice President Osibanjo pointed this out at the ceremony, as an  uncalled for insertion

The law in Nigeria REQUIRES a state gazetting of traditional rulers and the handing over of staff of office to an official monarch by the current Governor. otherwise it is not valid.  (Naming Oshiomhole as "outgoing" is unnecessary - he is the CURRENT Governor.)  The staff of office is invariably given ON Coronation Day.

So could you tell us exactly what the Governor did wrong here?  Should the staff of office be given BEFORE the CORONATION or SECRETLY?  Or was there a POLITICAL move to deny him the HISTORY of not presenting a staff of office to the Omo N'Oba?  After all, the Staff of Office is different from the Crown - I would imagine that it should be given AFTER the Crown has been affixed by the Kingmakers, as an affirmation by the State of the Kingmaker's choice?

Inquiring minds want to know.  I really don't understand the objection here....

Dear Prof

Follow the history of this matter.

The same Oshiomhole apologized weeks ago when he first issued a statement about it.  Ever so devious, he has proceeded to betray his intentions all along burying it alongside other diversions:

Nowa:

I think that the withdrawal is in order:  it is NOT the Edo State Government that appoints a monarch, but rather a state government AGREES with the annointment of a monarch along traditional lines, commensurate with the protection of law and order.

The first letter was clearly in error.....that is why I stated that a staff of office should be given AT CORONATION, when there is no longer any doubt about controversies over a monarch.

Or is there more to it than meets your eye?

Dear Prof

Thanks

But there was never any doubt in the Benin tradition of successor ship, ever since the principle of primogeniture came in effect, centuries ago. It has been upheld by the SUPREME court of NIGERIA several times.

But just a few days ago he could not hold himself back from announcing to a visiting British delegation that he would be giving the Oba his staff of office, first time since colonial era.

How come the 'all powerful' British who created the provinces and regions never gave the 'staff of office' to Eweka II in 1914 or Akenzua II 1933?

In a separate email, I shared a link from the archives referencing this matter. The Obaship in Benin is intricately wrapped in Edo traditional religion, and there are all sorts of nuances involved, reflected in arts and crafts, proverbs and idioms.

Brig/Maj Gen Abubakar Waziri 'gave' the 'staff of office' to Oba Erediauwa in March 1979 during the then military regime AFTER his crowning by the King makers. He did not advertise it.

It is not for nothing that the crowning itself is undertaken secretly among a highly select few and is ritualistic, like many african traditions

Ancient customs are very sensitive, and even the military regime in Thailand has handled matters relating to the King with caution and wisdom, even after his recent death. The unwritten alliance between un-elected military regimes and traditional rulers has also been exemplified in some other west african countries.

All through post colonial Nigerian history, various "elected" and "selected" governors, premiers, and administrators have handled this interface with caution and cunning. Why was the flag of the Sokoto caliphate, for example, captured in battle in 1903, returned by the British just before independence almost 60 years later?

Anyhow, I digress. The wisdom (or lack thereof) of these events will reveal themselves in time to come.

I siddon look. I no know book.....
Regards

NAO
