While the skyscraper index may be useful, for recession prediciton, I use my personal "frothy personal services index".
My non-profit is being turfed out of our building due to a 100% rent increase.
The new tenant? Rinse.com. Get your laundry done on demand. Picked up (by non-employee contract drivers), cleaned (by a contract bulk commercial cleaning facility not owned by Rinse) and delivered back to you for only 25-50% more than your neighborhood laundry. Can you say disruption?
And there are competitors!
getwashio.com;
instawash.us;
laundrylocker.com and (sign of that coming downturn?) recently shuttered
prim.com.
While there may be more there there than
pets.com; it still seems that going after a narrow niche with a small margin business dependent on high-disposable-income clients means we are awash in the frothy suds of an economic cycle top.
I'd go on, but my rinse cycle just finished and I have to go up hang my t-shirts.
